Final Round Player Quotes

Austria’s Maximilian Steinlechner, 24, wins the 2024 Gösser Open after making a par on the 1st playoff hole against Spain’s Asier Aguirre Izcue. He earned the winner’s check of €5,800.00 and 6,525 Order of Merit points. He followed his opening round of 5 under-par, with a 4 under-par in round two and an amazing 8 under-par to end the tournament at 17 under-par. Steinlechner mainly plays on the Challenge Tour, but nonetheless, he was very excited to be able to compete this week in his home country. After his win, he was very pleased as this was his first win in his home country: “So starting the third round, I knew the winning score was going to be low as the weather forecast was good. The few more putts that dropped today made the difference between me shooting 64 today and the first two rounds. In the playoff, I did the exact same thing as I did in regulation. Played my game and followed my strategy and got lucky that my opponent made a bogey while I made a solid par. It feels great to have my first win here in Austria, it’s great. I’m going to go enjoy it.”

Brandon Kewalramani, 25, from the United States, concludes the 2024 Gösser Open tied for 18th place with a three-day score of 9 under par. However, he won the 2024 Austrian International Par 3 Championships which took place on May 14th at Golf Club Graz-Andritz St. Gotthard, which is still owned by the Murhof Gruppe, this week’s promoter. After he concluded the tournament, he commented: “I had a fabulous time playing at the 2024 Austrian International Par 3 Championships at the beginning of the week. It was run very well, and the course was in excellent shape, and I really think it got my game in a good spot for this week’s tournament. It was a challenge as there weren’t only short shots but also 130/140-meter shots.”  Kewalramani added that being from: “the United States in California, I have to say I love playing in Europe, I love traveling in Europe and I must say the Alps Tour is a great tour, it’s run incredibly well, and I love the level of competition we have each week. You must play really well all three days to have any chance of being in contention. I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks in France and Spain and the rest of the year.”

After the sixth event of the season, the Alps Tour Order of Merit rank has Edoardo R. Lipparelli in the lead with 14,715.00 points. Aymeric Laussot stays in 2nd place with 12,001.50 points, and Enrico Di Nitto moves into 3rd place with 11,840.25.

17th May 2024 | Alps Tour Golf

Lukas Nemecz and Asier Aguirre Izcue are the Clubhouse Leaders as Round 2 is suspended at the 2024 Gösser Open.

Maria Lankowitz, May 17th, 2024- Austria’s own Lukas Nemecz and Spain’s Asier Aguirre Izcue are the current clubhouse leaders with a two-day total of 11 under-par as Round 2 was suspended at 8:23 p.m. local time due to darkness at the 2024 Gösser Open.

Round 2 of the 2024 Gösser Open began with a 2-hour delay due to unplayable course conditions after some very heavy overnight rain fell over Golf Club Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz, the tournament’s regular host. The second round officially began at 9:30 a.m. local time from the 1st and 10th hole. During the day, the players faced a mix of weather conditions, ranging from heavy rain to a blue sky, sunshine, and swirling winds. At 8:23 p.m. local time, the tournament director, Mr. Alessandro Pia, suspended play due to darkness.

Round 2 will resume at 7:00 am tomorrow morning while, the final round of the 2024 Gösser Open is expected to begin around 9:00 am. After round 2, a cut will be made to the top 40 players and ties.

Round 2 Player Quotes

Lukas Nemecz, 34, from Austria who tied for 3rd place after yesterday’s opening round, shot a 6 under-par, 66 in today’s round and is the clubhouse leader with a two-day total of 11 under-par alongside Spain’s Asier Aguirre Izcue as round 2 was suspended due to darkness.  He made 4 birdies and 1 bogey on the front nine holes and 3 birdies on the back nine to conclude the day. Nemecz is a former Alps Tour Winner and conquered the Gösser Open twice before in his career. He now currently plays on the DP World Tour. After his 6 under-par, 66 Nemecz commented: “I’m obviously very pleased with the first two days, the Gösser Open is a very special tournament for me and for all Austrian players. I’ve been able to win here twice already, and it’s been great to come back and play this tournament.” When asked about the past, he added: “I spent a lot of time playing on the Alps Tour, and I know the level is really good. Every young player needs to go through the Alps Tour to reach the Challenge Tour and the DP World Tour so it’s always nice to see the young upcoming players compete. Luckily so far, I’ve been playing really well, and it will be fun tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to it, I will need to certainly play my best. There are a lot of talented young golfers on the Alps Tour so it will be a good fight.” Nemecz added that he found the “course conditions to be very tough this year. We’ve had a lot of rain yesterday and overnight. In all the years I’ve played, I’ve never had the ball fly so short like it did this morning, and that made it very challenging.”

Spain’s Asier Aguirre Izcue, 24, was tied for 10th place after yesterday’s opening round, shot a 7 under-par, 65 in today’s round, and is the clubhouse leader alongside Nemecz with a two-day total of 11 under-par. He made 7 birdies and 1 bogey during today’s round 2. After his round 2, Aguirre Izcue was very happy: “it was a good round today, 7 under-par being very solid tee to green. I hit some great shots and holed some important putts. The conditions were tough today, at the beginning of the round especially. The greens are rolling really good I must say. Tomorrow, I hope to keep playing the same way I did today and be focused on my own game. Hopefully, that will put me in contention for the win.”

Italian amateur, Marco Florioli, 19, concludes his 2nd round of the Gösser Open with a two-day total of 9 under-par. He shot a 4 under-par, 68 with 5 birdies and 1 bogey. His best finish so far this season was a tie for 18th place at the 2024 Red Sea Little Venice Open, and he’s looking forward to trying to earn another good finish this week.

Austria’s Maximilian Steinlechner, 24, who was in a 7-way tie for 3rd place after round 1 of the 2024 Gösser Open is now 2 strokes off the current clubhouse lead as he shots a 2nd round of 4 under-par, 68 for a two-day total of 9 under-par. He made 2 bogeys and 6 birdies during the day. Steinlechner mainly plays on the Challenge Tour, but nonetheless, he was very excited to be able to compete this week in his home country in a tournament that is always very special to Austrian players. After his round, he commented on how: “Today was a little different than yesterday. We didn’t have rain, but we had on-and-off wind, which was very difficult to judge due to the surrounding area with the trees and hills. It was swirling in the trees which made it much more difficult to judge it correct it. I navigated the course well today and kept it together nicely. I made 2 dumb mistakes, which ended up in bogeys, but all in all, I’m very happy.”

Alongside Florioli and Steinlechner with a two-day total of 9 under-par there is: Italy’s Enrico Di Nitto and England’s Harry Ellis. Italy’s Davide Buchi is currently at 9 under-par but was still on the course when play was suspended. He will conclude his 2nd round tomorrow morning.

Austrian amateur Fabian Lang, concludes his 2nd round of the 2024 Gösser Open with a two-day total of 8 under-par and finds himself 3 shots off the current clubhouse lead.

Spain’s Eduard Rousaud, 24, currently 10th in the Order of Merit standings, concludes his 2nd round of the 2024 Gösser Open with a two-day total of 8 under-par and is 3 shots off the clubhouse lead as he shot a 2nd round of 6 under-par, 66. He has been playing well since the beginning of the season and is “looking to capture a trophy, hopefully in the upcoming events. I’ve worked really hard over the last 3 years, and the work is finally starting to pay off. I’m feeling better over the ball also that’s for sure.” Roussaud also added that today, he was: “really focused, much more than yesterday. I could tell I started getting uncomfortable when it was pouring rain because, for a moment, we had some very heavy rain today. I think we got a little luckier than yesterday as yesterday we had rain for the whole day but today it was just for a moment.”

The 2023 Alps Tour Grand Final presented by Auralis winner, Augustin Holé, 26, from France was tied for 3rd place after yesterday’s 1st round, finds himself in 3 shots off the clubhouse lead with a two-day total of 8 under-par. He shot a 3 under-par, 69 in today’s round with a quadruple bogey on his 1st hole of the day, the 10th of the golf course and then he went on to make 7 birdies on the remaining 17 holes to conclude the round. After his fabulous end to his round with three birdies in a row in the last three holes, Holé commented: “I had an awful start today, I measure a bad yardage and hit it twice over the green, out of bounds but told myself not try and get it back. I know my game is good enough to make a lot of birdies and I was able to do that. To make 7 birdies on the last 17 holes I’m proud to tell myself I did a pretty good job out there.”

Alongside Lang (am)Rousaud, and Holé, with a two-day total of 8 under par, are France’s Paul Margolis and England’s Harry Goddard.

The highlight of the day belongs to Thomas Austin from Austria who made a hole-in-one on hole 15 from 158 meters with a 6 iron.

The players are competing for an overall prize fund of €40,000 and 45,000 points. The winner of the 32nd edition of the Gösser Open will earn €5,800 and 6,525 Order of Merit points.

16th May 2024 | Alps Tour Golf

Paul Margolis and Andrea Romano are co-leading after round 1 of the 2024 Gösser Open.

Maria Lankowitz, May 16th 2024- After the first round of the 2024 Gösser Open, we have a very tight leaderboard. France’s Paul Margolis and Italy’s Andrea Romano are co-leading at 6 under-par. There is a 7-way tie for 3rd place at 5 under-par.
The first round of the 32nd edition of the Gösser Open, which is being held at its regular host, Golf Club Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz, Austria began this morning from Holes 1 and 10 at 7:30 am local time. Players had to face some tough weather conditions today as they battled under consistent rain showers, low clouds, and a temperature around 13° Celsius. The Gösser Open is the oldest and one of the most important tournaments on the Alps Tour schedule. This year we are celebrating the 32nd edition of the tournament.

The event began in 1993 at Steiermärkischer Golf Club Murhof and in 2000 it moved to Golf Club Erzherzog Johann, which became its permanent host. Just a year later in 2001, when the Alps Tour was founded, the Gösser Open became part of the Alps Tour schedule, and has been a regular event since.

Round 1 Player Quotes

Paul Margolis, 24, from France, who has won on the Alps Tour as an amateur in 2021, co-leads after the 1st round of the 2024 Gösser Open with a bogey-free round of 6 under-par, 66. He turned professional at the end of 2021 and has earned various top-10 finishes since. Margolis began his day on the hole 10 where he went on to make a birdie, he then made another birdie on the 12th, 13th and 16th hole before making the turn and adding another birdie on the 1st and 7th hole to conclude the round. After his round, Margolis commented on how, “I played really good golf today. I was really good off the tee, I think I hit every fairway so that made it a lot easier. My putting was also very good. The greens are in perfect condition.” The weather forecast wasn’t promising for today’s round and Margolis added that he found, “the conditions to be good, I was expecting harder weather conditions than what we had. The course is holding it nice. When I woke this morning and saw the rain, I was expecting we were only going to play 9 holes, but it was actually fine.” Looking ahead to the remaining two rounds, he plans on, “I’m going to rest now, hit a few putts and some shots, but most importantly, rest. I know it’s going to be a long day tomorrow; they are forecasting some heavy rain tonight, so we might have a delay tomorrow, but we will see. I think rest will be crucial to find myself in position on Saturday.”

Italy’s Andrea Romano, 23, finds himself in the lead alongside Margolis after round 1 of the 2024 Gösser Open. During today’s opening round, he shot a bogey-free round of 6 under-par, 66 with 1 birdie on the front nine and 5 birdies on the back nine. He has earned numerous top-10 finishes since he began playing on the Alps Tour but is now looking to break through and earn his first win. After his round, Romano was extremely satisfied with the day, “6 under-par with no bogey makes me very happy. My game is very solid, and today, my putting was very strong. I started on the front nine where I made a lot of pars and only 1 birdie. However, on the back nine, I made 4 birdies in a row, and then on the 16th hole I made an important putt to get to -6. Then, on the 17th and 18th hole, I made some nice recovery shots for par that makes me pleased. This score puts me in a good position for the rest of the tournament.”

Italian amateur, Marco Florioli, 19, is in a 7-way tie for 3rd place at the conclusion of the 1st round of the 2024 Gösser Open alongside: Maximilian SteinlechnerEnrico Di NittoDavide Buchi, Xavier Poncelet, Lukas Nemecz and Augustin Holé. He shot a 5 under-par, 67 round today making 3 birdies on the front nine holes and then made 1 bogey and 3 birdies on the back nine. His best finish so far this season was a tie for 18th place at the 2024 Red Sea Little Venice Open. Once his completed his day, Florioli explained how today, “my game was very sharp today, I could have holed a few more putts than what I did but I found the greens to be quite tough as there is a lot of grain on them. I will try to make a few more putts during tomorrow’s round. I will use the same strategy and we will see how it goes.”

Austria’s Maximilian Steinlechner, 24, is the 2nd place in the 7-way tie for 3rd place with a bogey-free, 5 under-par, 67 after round 1 of the 2024 Gösser Open. In today’s opening round, he began his day with 3 birdies in a row that included a chip-in on the 2nd hole. He went on to make 2 more birdies on the front nine before having all pars on the back nine to conclude the day. Steinlechner mainly plays on the Challenge Tour, but nonetheless, he was very excited to be able to compete this week in his home country, “it’s always important to play tournaments, it doesn’t matter where you play, but tournaments are tournaments, and you always want to do well in any event you play in. So far this year, I’ve played 3 Challenge Tour events, 2 Pro Golf Tours, and this week here on the Alps Tour.” After his opening round, he commented on how: “It was for sure a good start to the tournament here. I played really well on the front nine, but I must say I had a little bit of luck. I chipped in on the 2nd hole, and then I hit the pin on 10. It was a mix of solid play and some luck on my side that’s for sure, but I’m very happy.” When asked about playing in his home country, he added, “it’s always nice playing at home, I’ve played this event twice as an amateur and you know you see familiar faces and you are familiar with the courses.”  With today’s weather conditions, he found that: “it was chillier, and the ball definitely didn’t fly as far. The course is also wet, so you must judge the reaction on the greens.”

Alongside Florioli (am) and Steinlechner, who shot a first-round score of 5 under par, 67, are Italy’s Enrico Di Nittoand Davide Buchi, France’s Xavier Poncelet and Augustin Holé, and Lukas Nemecz from Austria.

The competitors this week are battling it out for an overall prize fund of €40,000 and 45,000 points. The winner of the 32nd edition of the Gösser Open, will earn €5,800 and 6,525 Order of Merit points. Once Round 2 is completed, a cut will be made to the top 40 players and ties.

After his victory, he was very pleased, “It was a difficult 36 holes, in these conditions. Trying to keep the umbrella up and down and keeping my bag as dry as possible, a lot of things to happening on top of the golf that has to be played. Being from Ireland and having grown up into these conditions probably helped me. I can assure you that no one likes playing in these conditions but I might have slightly more experience than the rest of the guys.”  Ronan went on to add: “I’m delighted to have won this event but it won’t mean a lot to me unless I’m able to end the season in the top 5 at the end of the year.”

Gianmaria Rean Trinchero from Italy who currently represents Golf Club Monticello concluded the tournament in 2nd place at 8-under par. After his round, Gianmaria happily commented: “today was another very wet round of golf, unfortunately, I got the bad side of the draw where we got hit with the heaviest rain but I’m pleased as I played pretty well from tee to green and putted very well.” He went on to add that “I’m very happy because I didn’t make any silly mistakes that allowed me to not make many bogeys. I would like to thank my caddy for the support this week on all the on-course decisions we made together and allowed me to not make silly errors”. Gianmaria also said: “My objectives for the year won’t change, I obviously would like to finish the season in the top 5 of the Order of Merit rank.”

Austria’s Timon Baltl who represents Murhof Golf Club and previously won the Gösser Open in 2019, concluded the tournament in 3rd place with a two-day score of 7 under-par. He captured his Challenge Tour card in 2020 thanks to the results he achieved on the Alps Tour in the 2019 season. Timon concluded the event as the highest Austrian player on the leaderboard. After the round, he commented “I played a lot of golf at this golf course since it’s very close to where I was born. I played various junior events growing up as well as the Gösser Open for so many years. It really helps to know the course inside and out especially as I know the greens well and they can be tricky. I stayed in Graz at my dad’s house this week which is what I believe one of the reasons that allowed me to play well.”   Timon believed his key this week was to “stay calm and patient especially with the weather conditions we had and also because the course was really wet. It would have been easy to get frustrated but I’m glad I was able to remain patient throughout the week.”

At the conclusion of the 31st Gösser Open, Spain’s Quim Vidal still leads the current Order of Merit standings. Ireland’s Ronan Mullarney jumped into 2nd place with his win today. In 3rd place Netherland’s Kiet Van der Weele and in 4th place France’s Oihan Guillamoundeguy. England’s Jack Floydd rounds out the top 5.

Final Round

Ronan Mullarney winner of the 2023 Gösser Open, earned 6,525 Order of Merit points and the winning check of €5,800. The players competed for an overall prize fund of €40.000 and 45,000 Order of Merit points.
