The Alps Tour returns to its historic roots in Austria for the 33rd Gösser Open
Maria Lankowitz, May 12th 2025- The 2025 Gösser Open marks the next stop on the Alps Tour schedule as the tour heads North to Austria. The tournament will take place at Golf Club Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz from Thursday, May 15th to Saturday, May 17th.
Ahead of the Gösser Open, the 2025 Austrian International Par 3 Championships will be held on May 13th at GC Graz-Andritz in Graz, owned by the Murhof Gruppe, the promoter of this week’s event. Some of the professionals competing in this week’s Par 3 Championship will also be vying for the prestigious Gösser Open title.
On Wednesday, May 14th the traditional Gösser Open Best Ball Net and Gross Pro-Am will take place with a shotgun start. There are 32 teams that will compete in this exciting pre-tournament event.
The Gösser Open is one of the most important tournaments of the Alps Tour season and holds the distinction of being the oldest tournament on the Alps Tour schedule. It is also widely regarded as the most traditional professional golf tournament in Austria.
The event first began in 1993 at Steiermärkischer Golf Club Murhof, before moving to Golf Club Erzherzog Johann in 2000, where it has remained as the permanent host venue. Following the founding of the Alps Tour in 2001, the Gösser Open became part of the Tour schedule and has been a key event ever since.
The Field
The 2025 Gösser Open will welcome a standout field of 144 competitors, featuring every winner from this season’s Alps Tour events contested so far: Luca Galliano (Ein Bay Open), Alvaro Hernandez Cabezuela (Red Sea Little Venice Open and Tunisian Golf Open), Javier Barcos (New Giza Open), Rocco Repetto (La Cigale Golf Open by Alps Tour) and our most recent winner from last week’s event, the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by AON, Asier Aguirre Izcue.
Also set to tee it up this week are all ten players currently ranked inside the current top 10 of the Alps Tour Order of Merit. Leading the standings is two-time winner Alvaro Hernandez Cabezuela, with Rocco Repetto in second place and Javier Barcos in third. The current top three positions are all held by Spanish players.
Over the years, the Gösser Open has seen several notable champions, including England’s Matt Wallace, who lifted the trophy in 2016. Austrian players have also enjoyed repeated success, with past winners such as Lukas Nemecz, Gordon Manson, Timon Baltl, Maximilian Steinlechner, Niklas Regner and Markus Brier all leaving their mark on the tournament’s history. In the most recent edition, Steinlechner claimed victory with a par on the first playoff hole, adding another homegrown name to the tournament’s storied legacy.
This week, 144 players from 18 different nationalities will compete for the prestigious title. The tournament has a prize fund of €42,500 and 45,000 Order of Merit points, and the winner will earn €6,200 and 6,525 points.
The event will be contested over 54 holes of stroke play, with a cut made after 36 holes to the top 40 professionals and ties, plus amateurs within the cut. In the event of a tie at the conclusion of the final round, the tournament winner will be decided by a sudden-death play-off.

The Course
Golf Club Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz, located approximately 40 kilometers west of Graz, offers a par-72 course stretching 5,967 meters. Designed by architect DI Herwig Zisser and inaugurated in 1992, the course sits on the edge of a protected natural reserve in the scenic region of Western Styria. Uniquely, the club was developed as part of a revitalization project on land previously used as a coal mine, blending rich history with environmental renewal.
The course is known for its picturesque landscape—rolling hills, tranquil lakes, and forested surroundings—creating a visually stunning backdrop. However, its strategic layout also presents a significant challenge, demanding accuracy and precision from players throughout the round.
The tournament course record stands at 63, a score achieved by Lukas Lipold in the second round of the 2022 Gösser Open, Thomas Feyrsinger in the second round of the 2005 event, and Claude Grenier in the first round of the 2011 edition.

The 7th event of the 2025 season, is promoted by the Murhof Gruppe. The Murhof Gruppe runs more than 30 golf courses throughout Austria, including this week’s venue in Maria Lankowitz.
