Repetto leads Bergamaschi by one stroke as La Cigale Golf Open heads to Final Round
Tabarka, March 26th, 2025 – The second round of the La Cigale Golf Open by Alps Tour was heavily influenced by challenging weather conditions that prevented players from performing at their peak throughout the day. Persistent rain, occasionally pausing but often returning in intense bursts lasting several minutes, combined with a strong westerly wind, featuring gusts exceeding 40 km/h, particularly affected the seaside holes.
Spaniard Rocco Repetto, starting in the afternoon, seized the tournament lead with a bogey-free back nine, highlighted by a chip-in birdie on the 16th and another birdie on the final hole. Repetto stands at -8 (66-70). Hot on his heels is Italy’s Filippo Bergamaschi, who began the day in the morning and held the lead until Repetto’s late surge with two closing birdies. Bergamaschi sits at -7 (66-71), just one shot back. In third place is France’s Tom Gueant at -6 (68-70). Spain’s Alejandro Aguilera and Italy’s Jacopo Vecchi Fossa share fourth place at -4, four shots under par.
Only 14 players managed to stay under par after this weather-affected day. Ireland’s Ronan Mullarney posted the best score of the round, an impressive 68 (-4), featuring four birdies and one eagle on the par-4, 366-meter, 14th hole.
The cut left 43 players in contention, all set to take the course tomorrow for the final round of the La Cigale Golf Open.
ROUND 2 PLAYERS QUOTES
Spanish golfer Rocco Repetto, 22, teed off in the afternoon session today and shared his thoughts on his round:
“It was a tough day out there. We had rain on the front nine and wind gusts on the back nine. I wasn’t hitting my irons great, but I chipped and putted very well, which I’m really pleased about because I managed to get up-and-down a lot. I also chipped in on the seventh hole, my 16th, for a birdie. That was a great bonus, especially since I knew I needed another birdie coming in to take the lead on the leaderboard.”
Filippo Bergamaschi, 30, started in the morning and held the top spot on the leaderboard throughout the afternoon until Repetto caught up and overtook him. Repetto sealed the lead by one stroke with a birdie on the 18th.
“It was a challenging day, but I’m satisfied with my game,” Bergamaschi said. “On the sixth hole, my 15th, as I started on the 10th, I pulled my drive to the right. The ball hit the path and ended up in the bushes, and unfortunately, I made a bogey. The weather conditions affected everyone today, and on this course, it’s never easy, so you have to stay focused and can’t afford mistakes. I’m pleased with my tee-to-green play. I holed quite a few putts, and maybe two, which were struck really well, could have gone in, but they didn’t.”
Tom Gueant, 23, famed for winning the 2019 British Boys Amateur as the first French player to do so in 60 years, later moved to Florida to pursue studies and golf. He turned professional in 2024, and this marks his first full season on the Alps Tour.
“For me, it was a good day today,” Gueant said. “The weather was very changeable and tough to adapt to, but I stuck to my game plan. I saved some solid pars when the conditions made it difficult. On the fifth hole, after a poor first shot, I ended up in the bunker with my second, but I made a really good up-and-down from there. Then, when the conditions improved slightly, I was able to attack a bit and create some birdie opportunities, which I capitalized on at a few holes. I’m pretty pleased with my round and excited to be near the top of the leaderboard. Tomorrow, the weather is supposed to be even worse, so we’ll try to adapt, but at least everyone will be in the same conditions.”
