The 8th edition of the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni is ready to get underway.
Como, May 23rd 2022– After a week off, the tour returns to the Northwestern part of Italy for the 8th edition of the Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon. The event will be played at Golf Club La Pinetina near Como, Italy from Wednesday 25th May until Friday 27th May. On Tuesday 24th May, the traditional best ball aggregate to par pro-am with 25 teams will take place.
This event is named and dedicated to highly acclaimed golf instructor, Giorgio Bordoni who unexpectedly passed away at the age of 48 in 2013. In 1991 he was one of the founders of the Blue Team Golf Academy, a unique and innovative initiative in the world of coaching. He worked many years for the Italian Golf Federation as a National Coach earning many accomplishments during his career.
The tournament has reached its 8th edition this year and has been a consistent stop on the Alps Tour schedule since 2014, except for 2020 when the event wasn’t played due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Field-
This tournament has some notable past champions. The first edition of the tournament was won by Spain’s Borja Virto in 2014, while Spain’s Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez came to victory in 2019. Another Spanish victory occurred in 2021 with the current defending champion Angel Hidalgo Portillo winning with a total score of 14 under-par. Meanwhile current DP World Tour player, Italy’s Guido Migliozzi triumphed in 2018. From 2015 to 2018 the tournament was won by Italian players: Marco Crespi, Stefano Pitoni, Guido Migliozzi and Andrea Perrino all of whom have been able to honor their fellow colleague, Giorgio Bordoni with their victories.
The majority of this seasons past winners that include: Italy’s Stefano Mazzoli currently 2nd in the Order of Merit, France’s amateur Oihan Guillamoundeguy and Portugal’s Tomas Bessa Guimaraes currently 3rd in the Order of Merit will be competing for the 8th Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon title. However, two of this season’s past champions will not be playing, Markus Brier, the winner at the 30th Gösser Open and Koen Kouwenaar the winner at the 2022 Molinetto Alps Open and the current Alps Tour Order of Merit Leader.
There will be 144 players competing for a prize fund of €40,000 and 45,000 points. The winner of the 8th Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon will earn € 5,800 and 6,525 Order of Merit points.
The Course-
Golf Club La Pinetina in Como, Italy is a very undulating 5761 meters par 70 course. It was designed by Harris Albertini Mezzalane and opened for play in 1971. It offers beautiful panoramic views of the nearby landscape that include the view of Monte Rosa which is the second highest mountain in Italy.
Golf Club La Pinetina covers 70 hectars in the Appiano Gentile Pine Forest, rich of pine trees, oak and chestnut trees as well as Scotch pine and birch trees. It’s not a particularly long course, however the complex course design situated on a very hilly terrain, requires accuracy and precise strategy from each player. Thanks to the natural layout of this golf course, players will find notable holes that will allow this course to stand out from the rest.

Koen Kouwenaar leads the way after the First Round at Molinetto Country Club
Milan, May 4th 2022- An overcast morning with a pleasant spring temperature welcomed the players for the 1st round of the inaugural 2022 Molinetto Alps Open in Milan, Italy. Play began at 7:30 am from both the 1st and 10th hole. The first round was suspended at 17:41 due to dangerous weather in the area and resumed at 18:41 (1 hour).
At the completion of the first round, we have a packed leaderboard with Koen Kouwenaar leading the field with a brilliant 8 under-par round 63. Eemil Alajarvi, Stefano Pitoni and Jacobo Pastor are just one shot back with a 7 under-par round 64. They hold a 1 stroke advantage over Italy’s Davide Buchi, France’s Sebastien Gandon and Nicolas Platret and Swiss Mathias Eggenberger who shot a 6 under-par round 65. Current Order of Merit leader, Italy’s Stefano Mazzoli shot a 3 under-par round and is 5 shots from the lead.
Round 1 Quotes-
Netherland’s Koen Kouwenaar who turned professional at the end 2020 is currently playing in his first season on the Alps Tour, due to a wrist injury which ended up needing surgery last year. When Koen concluded his bogey-free 8 under-par round 63 he was very pleased and commented his game by saying, “I was solid all the way around with a decent putter and a consistent straight long irons which you need on this type of course. The greens are slightly smaller than usual but they are very good.” Koen hopes to conclude this week with a win but knows he “needs to stay in the process and not look at the results to quickly. It is very hard to finish it off so I need stay focused and not get carried away by the results.”
Jacobo Pastor currently 33 years old and a past winner on the Alps Tour shot a 7 under-par round today which included 9 birdies and 2 bogeys. After his round today, Pastor was pleased to comment on how well he played today, “I am very happy with today’s result. Starting with a -7 is fantastic and I hope to keep it going the rest of the week. Each player has its own strategy this week because you need to be straight from the tee shots otherwise you’ll be penalized and I prefer to hit a lot of 3 woods to have short irons into these greens to have more birdie opportunities.” Pastor also said he started this season with a lot of expectations and wasn’t playing well but after being forced to stay home 2 weeks from having contracted COVID-19, he was able to re-evaluate his strategy and work method. He now “hopes this is the start of something very good.”
Italy’s Stefano Pitoni, 32 years old, a past winner on the Alps Tour had a consistent round today with 32 shots on the front nine and 32 shots on the back nine for a total 7 under-par 64. In his round, he had 1 eagle, 1 bogey and a total of 6 birdies. After his round, Stefano commented, “I am very happy about today, you have to be very precise of the tee on this course which I’m glad I was. I hit some amazing second shots and got lucky holing a couple long putts.”
Finland’s Eemil Alajarvi only 22 years old and playing his 7th event of this season had a great start to his first round here at the inaugural 2022 Molinetto Alps Open. His round included 8 birdies and just one bogey for a 7 under-par 64. He started his round with 3 birdies on his front and continued with 1 bogey and 5 birdies on the back nine to end his round. After his round, Alajarvi commented on how well he played and how his game fitted this course. He said, “I played very solid and hit a lot of good approach shots and that made it easy to have a lot of birdie opportunities. I really like Molinetto Golf Club and it’s very good for my game as I don’t hit it very long but I hit it very straight so it fits my game very well.”
Among the 144 players competing this week you’ll find 130 professionals and 14 amateurs. The tournament winner will earn 6,525 Order of Merit points and 5,800 €. The players will be competing for a prize fund of 40.000 € and 45,000 Order of Merit points.

Round 1 of Cervino Open ends on 3-way tie
Stefano Pitoni (ITA), Timon Baltl (AUT) and Andrea Saracino (ITA) turned in the best cards of the day today at the Cervino Open to finish round 1 on a 3-way tie with a total score of -7.
Alexandre Daydou (FRA), Ben Wheeler (ENG) and Jacopo Albertoni (ITA, Am) are on their heels one stroke behind at -6 total. .
« I’m really satisfied, -7 is a really good score » Timon Baltl said. « I got off to a perfect start, I made 6 birdies in the first 7 holes, I made 8 3s in a row, so it was obviously a perfect start » he explained. « I must admit I thought a little about shooting a 59 (the course is a par 68) because it’s the magic number in golf but I did not hit the fairways on the back 9. Anyway, I’m very delighted with this first round » he continued. « The course is different from any other courses, some holes are crazy, some holes are very good holes, but I really like it here, it’s so beautiful with the mountains, I enjoyed it » he concluded.
« My day was really great.I played really good golf, I hit a lot of good shots and I putt also really well because on this course, you need to putt well » Stefano Pitoni said. « I started really good. I birdied on hole 2 after holing my chip shot. I also birdied on hole 3 and this gave me a lot of energy and I continued to play good throughout the round. So I’m happy with my round » he added.
« I started with a bogey at hole 10 and then I made 8 birdies and 0 bogeys » Andrea Saracino, recent winner of the Des Iles Borromées Open at the end of July, said.
« The course is very tricky, the greens are very small and the putt is important here » he concluded.
Thunderstorms disrupted the afternoon session as play had to be suspended for a bit less than an hour and a half. Temperatures were in the mid-10s.
Round 2 will tee off tomorrow at 7h30 at the Cervino Golf Club .

Rising golf stars head to Italy
Rising golf stars of the Alps Tour will be in Italy this week for the Open la Pinetina June 27th through June 29th.
The tournament is played in memory of Giorgio Bordoni, a popular professional coach working for the Italian pro team, who passed away in 2013. The tournament was played for the first time in 2014 at La Pinetina Golf Club in Appiano Gentile near Lake Como where Bordoni started playing when he was young.

Pitoni sealed third win back on home soil
Italy’s Stefano Pitoni won his third victory this season thanks to final round 64, -15 total, in Abruzzo Open. After his maiden win in La Pinetina last June, then a second trophy in Saint Malo Open in July, the 26 year old player grabbed a third title back on home soil.
He gained three shots on his last two holes, birdie-eagle, to take the club house lead and eventually, none of the players behind could catch up with him.
Fellow countrymen Federico Maccario and Enrico Di Nitto are ties for second place one shot further. They both signed for 69.
France’s Raphaël Marguery had solid round, 67, to finish at 4th place on his own a shot back.
Overnight leader, Tom Shadbolt, could not beat the par today and finished 5th tie with Robin Goger, Uli Weinhandl and Thomas Elissalde.
Time to have a look at the Alps Tour ranking. Despite 3 wins in 2016, Pitoni is at 6th place and needs to confirm next week. Victor Perez who missed the cut in Abruzzo Open slept from 2nd to third place. Enrico Di Nitto took his place. Tom Shadbolt is now at 4th position and Franck Daux 5th. Federico Maccario is 7th.
The Final next week is to be played on same course as the Abruzzo Open. The winner will earn 9750 €, the second biggest check of the season and many players could still be part of the graduates.

Pitoni defeated Marguery in Brittany
Italy’s Stefano Pitoni defeated France’s Raphaël Marguery after first extra hole to seal his second victory this season. He won the inaugural Saint Malo Golf Open with -13 total. England’s Andrew Cooley is third on his own two shots back.
That was not an easy win. Pitoni started very well though with two birdies back to back but that was almost the only momentum of the day. He turned first nine two under par but did not manage to secure a leading score as France’s Marguery put pressure. He signed for 71, one under par.
It took 12 holes for the player from Versailles to catch up with the Italian. Marguery eventually took the leadership on his own thank to an eagle on the 15th. But he dropped back to back shot on the following holes. He holed for birdie on the last to record 68 and had to wait for Pitoni to finish to know if extra time on course was needed.
They both drove in the middle of the fairway playing the 18th as first extra hole. Then both went short of the green then hit the green in 3. Pitoni holed for birdie as Margeury missed it.
Thanks to this win Pitoni entered the Top 5 of Alps Tour ranking.

Pitoni soars 3 shots clear in Saint Malo
Stefano Pitoni increased his advantage heading to last round of Saint Malo Golf Open. He shot a five under par card 67, -12 total to stand 3 shots clear of England’s Andrew Cooley and France’s Raphaël Marguery.
It seems to be the year of multiple victories. Franck Daux had back to back wins in Egypt, Matt Wallace recorded five titles in seven tournament and this week, Pinoti is racing for second win after his triumph on home soil last month.
The 26 year old player from Rieti recorded the best score during opening round and he almost did as well today with six birdies and only one dropped shot.
Bit hitter Andrew Cooley, whose last victory was in Egypt in 2015, had the perfect round. A flawless 65 to share second place at -9 with France’s Raphaël Marguery. The latter is the only one on the provisional podium not to have lift a trophy during his pro career. He fired 67.

Stefano Pitoni set the target in Brittany
Italy’s Stefano Pitoni signed for the score of the day, 65, -7 to stand one shot clear of fellow countryman Nunzio Lombardi after first round of Saint Malo Golf Open. Another Italian player is among the group of four tie for third place with -4, Luca D’Andreamatteo, Raphaël Marguery, Julien Rodallec and Jean-Pierre Verselin.
This is the inaugural Saint Malo Golf Open and the sun was generous with the players. Pitoni, who won 3 weeks ago in Italy, managed to tame the course thanks to good conditions and solid game. He recorded 7 birdies, one eagle on the 18th and dropped only 2 shots during his round. On his toes, Lombardi had 5 birdies, one eagle, 18th and one bogey.
Former European Tour big hitter, Britanny’s François Delamontagne had an invitation to play as he wished to feel the spirit of the competition again. He shot one under par.

Pitoni crowned in La Pinetina Open
Italy’s Stefano Pitoni won La Pintetina Open with -15 total thanks to last round 67. At second place, his fellow countryman Enrico Di Nitto, two shots back. The latter signed for best score of the day, 6 under par card, 64. He played perfect golf, had six birdies and no dropped shots.
A group of 3 players share third place on the podium. Ireland’s Gavin Moynihan who fired 65, Swiss Luca Galliano and England’s Tom Shadbolt who struggled to keep same rhythm as second round. He could not beat the par during last round.
The order of merit has now a new face. England’s Matt Wallace is still leading with ridiculous advantage of mors than 15 000 points (almost 3 wins), Franck Daux is still second with 16 415 points. Italy’s Enrico Di Nitto is third with 13 866 points and Robin Goger and Léo Lespinasse almost tie for 4th place with less than 2 points margin at 9766 points.

Stefano Pitoni holds firm in the rain
Second round is now finally completed after 2 days and half and Italy’s Stefano Pitoni kept his leadership. He scored yesterday morning back to back 64 to lead at -12 the Pinetina Open. The second had been suspended yesterday in the middle of the afternoon and could only resume this morning.
England’s Tom Shadbolt signed for the best score of the week, 61 to be 2 shots back. His fellow countryman, Matt Wallace, leader of the Alps Tour order of merit and author of a stunning 59 a few weeks back was his biggest supporter on social media as Shalbolt turned first nine -6.
Swiss Luca Galliano, first round co-leader, managed to shot 2 under and is third on his own heading to the last round. The cut felt at -1 and the last round is to be played this afternoon.
