Bergamaschi Stays Ahead Day 2
October 29th, 2020 – Rome, Italy – It continued to be a closely fought match at the top of the leader board at the Italy Alps Open with some movement, but the Italian player, Filippo Bergamaschi kept his lead at -10 (134) overall.
With three birdies and a bogey going out and another birdie coming in, Bergamaschi had a 69 (-3) for the day compared to his 65 (-7) the day before:
“My game was pretty clean. I probably didn’t play my best. Yesterday I played a lot better but today was pretty solid and I’m happy with the score. Tomorrow, I’ll try to do the same thing as today and yesterday. Try to keep it in play, hit the greens and hole some putts and just be very steady”.
But still hot on his heels is Jeong Weon Ko from France who kept his second place at -9 (135) albeit now shared with the Italian player, Jacopo Vecchi Fossa. Teeing off around twenty minutes after the leader, Ko opened with a birdie to draw level. However, a bogey on the third cancelled out the advantage and a birdie on the fourth hole for Bergamaschi saw him draw ahead again. Unfortunately, Ko did not repeat his bogey-free round of yesterday totalling two along with five birdies to finish with a 69 (-3).
The joint number two, Jacopo Vecchi Fossa was one of only two players today to card the best score of 66 (-6), the other being Ryan Lumsden of Scotland lying 28th. Four birdies and an eagle with matching 33 (-3) on each nine. His eagle on the 14th hole par 5 was one of the four made on the course today and saw him climb two places on the leader board.
No move for Jacobo Pastor from Spain, still sitting in fourth position with -8 (136) but on his own today after carding a 67 (-5) with seven birdies and two bogeys.
Julien Foret from France dropped back one place to joint fifth at -7 (137) and is joined by the rookie from Sweden, Oliver Jacobsson. The Swede had an excellent round of 67 (-5) which saw him move up four slots after seven birdies and two bogeys.
The cut came at +3 (147) which will see 50 players teeing off tomorrow as of 8:00am at the Golf Nazionale, 45 professional and 5 amateurs.
The weather forecast says that tomorrow will be a “great day for golf” which is good news for this all-important final round and the three places for Alps Tour members on the Challenge Tour for next season.

Filippo Bergamaschi Leads After Day 1
October 28th, 2020 – Rome, Italy – The Italian player, Filippo Bergamaschi shot a -7 (65) to head the leader board here at the Golf Nazionale after Round 1 of the Italy Alps Open.
Bergamaschi is a former Alps Tour player who went on to play on the Challenge Tour and the European Tour. He carded one eagle, six birdies and a sole bogey in a round that he described as perfect. He was also glad to be back on an Alps Tour tournament as he acknowledged how much experience he gained from his time on the tour and what a great training ground it is to raise players’ game.
However, right behind him is the Alps Tour rookie, Jeong Weon Ko at -6 (66). Ko is fresh from his first professional win at the Open PGA France FFgolf de Roissy last weekend. He had not been 100% happy with his game at Roissy but today was different:
“I was a little stressed on the first 3 holes. I was confident of my game, but I knew it was an important tournament for me, so I felt some pressure. I managed the first three holes well, and after that it just came naturally. I had good drives, good irons, I made 18 greens in regulation which obviously helped. It was great to not have a single bogey which is what I’ve been trying to do since the beginning of the year, and this was the first time I have managed it. So, really happy with this first round. The score is no surprise considering the iron shots that I made and let’s hope it continues like that.”
Indeed, currently sitting seventh on the Order of Merit, one of the three available places on the Challenge Tour for next season is still within Ko’s grasp.
Just behind him at -5 (67) is the Irishman, Jonathan Yates. He has had three top ten finishes this season with a runner-up position in February but has yet to nail his first win. A bogey-free round, three birdies and one eagle keep him in the running.
In the group of five players behind at -3 (69) we have two Italians, Carlo Casalegno and Jacopo Vecchi Fossa, with Vitor Londot Lopes from Portugal, Julien Foret from France and Jacobo Pastor from Spain who won the last Alps Tour competition at the end of September, Alps de Las Castillas.
We then have a pack of eleven players at -2 (70) so the field remains wide open and the stakes are high.
Weather conditions were good today with some wind gusts and more of the same is forecast for tomorrow.

Italy Alps Open Draws the 2020 Season to an End
October 26th, 2020 – Rome, Italy – The ninth and final tournament of the Alps Tour 2020 season is due to start in two days, here at the Italian Golf Federation course, the Golf Nazionale. And it is going to be a battle of titans to secure one of the three available places on the Challenge Tour next season.
All ten of the top players on this year’s Order of Merit will be on the starting blocks. The leader, Jordi Garcia Del Moral, with a win at the Cervino Open and four other top ten finishes this season will be looking to keep his number one position. However, his four Spanish compatriots in the top ten will be giving him a run for his money: Lucas Vacarisas, Alps de Andalucia Open victor, in second place, Angel Hidalgo Portillo in sixth, Jacobo Pastor fresh from his first international victory at Alps de Las Castillas Open in eighth and Alejandro Del Rey in ninth, winner of the Open de la Mirabelle d’Or.
Needless to say, the Italian field will be out in force too. Third on the OofM, Stefano Mazzoli, winner of the Red Sea Little Venice Open this year, joins thirty-one players looking for a home win. Notably, last year’s winner, Enrico Di Nitto, who finished second on the OofM 2019 qualifying him for the Challenge Tour in 2020 alongside another strong contender, Edoardo Lipparelli, winner of last year’s OofM.
But two more top ten 2020 OofM players are sure to be ready to go down to the line. Lars Keunen from the Netherlands with a win at the Ein Bay Open and two more top ten finishes this year and the experienced Alps Tour player, Englishman Sam Robinson, looking for his elusive first victory. Fifth and fourth respectively on the OofM, they have everything to play for. Just like the French rookie, Jeong Weon Ko from France, currently sitting seventh.
This is the second time that the Golf Nazionale has hosted the tournament and the 84 players, 73 professionals and 11 amateurs, should start the tournament with sunny weather, pleasant temperatures in the afternoon if a little nippy in the morning, and not too much wind. However, they still have to face a course considered to be one of the most challenging in Italy. Let’s hope they can still take the time to savour the beautiful Lazio countryside vistas and the distant Cimini mountains on the horizon.

Jacobo Pastor Wins First International Tournament
Salamanca, (Spain), 2nd October 2020 –Jacobo Pastor from Spain held onto his lead of yesterday to emerge victor at the Alps de las Castillas with a total score of 203 (-13). A real achievement given the weather today as he explained:
“I’m happy, especially playing a solid round under these conditions. It was crazy. I don’t know how hard the wind was blowing but some gusts of like 80 kilometres an hour. At some point we took forever because the ball was moving on the green. Overall, it was a really, really tough day to be honest.”
Today’s scores reflect the reality of the challenges posed here at the Salamanca Golf & CC – Zarapicos with only six of the 58 players coming in under par for the day, giving a score board more like a links course in Scotland.
Jacobo Pastor teed off at -13 and at the end of the first nine was at par (36) after two birdies and two bogeys. A repeat performance for the back nine saw him finishing the round at par (72) for the day. Good enough to secure him his first victory in an international tournament.
His playing partners, Ryan Lumsden from Scotland and Tomas Bessa Guimaraes from Portugal, also finished at par, meaning that the top of the leaderboard today was the same as at end of play yesterday. Lumsden, however, gave the winner a run for his money. At the end of the front nine, the Scotsman had drawn level with Pastor after two birdies. Pastor then birdied the 10th to draw ahead but bogeyed the 12th which cancelled his lead as Lumsden had straight pars. Pastor describes the last few holes:
“The turnaround time was on the 13th hole when Ryan made a double bogey and I hit a really good shot on the par three and put it in for par. Then on the 15th I made a birdie and was three up. Par on 16th and 17th and so on the 18th I thought, okay this is it, you’ve got it”.
Indeed, even though Pastor bogeyed the 18th, his closest contender, Lumsden came home with pars and a total 205 (-11) to take second place, an excellent result for the young Scottish rookie who moves thirteen places up the Order of Merit to number twelve.
In third place Tomas Bessa Guimaraes from Portugal finished at 207 (-9) after four birdies and four pars.
Jacobo Pastor’s win sees him shoot up the OofM by 31 places to position him in the top ten at eighth. As he explains, the Alps Tour invitation for him to play at the Open de la Mirabelle d’Or helped him to have a concrete plan for the future:
“I became a member of the Alps Tour after France where I got an invite. I played pretty well and finished sixth. With the Corona virus, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want to stay at home in 2021 so I decided to try and get an Alps Tour card for next year. So now I can actually have a decent schedule, I can focus on preparing a real season unlike this past season where I was playing tournaments on every tour to try and get a win.” Mission accomplished!
The top six places on the OofM remain unchanged with Jordi Garcia del Moral still leader after eight tournaments. The ninth and final tournament of the Alps Tour 2020 season is the Italy Alps Open from 28th to 30th October. After an extremely intensive playing schedule in September this gives the players time to recharge their batteries before heading to the Golf Nazionale, outside Rome.
