29th May 2024 | Alps Tour Golf

Two players are tied for the lead after Round 1 at the 2024 Alps de Roquetas de Mar.

Roquetas de Mar, May 29th, 2024 – After the first round of the 2024 Alps de Roquetas de Mar, we have a very tight leaderboard. Co-leading at 5 under-par Finland’s Eemil Alajarvi and Ireland’s Paul McBride. There is a 4-way tie for 3rdplace at 4 under-par.

The first round of the 2024 Alps de Roquetas de Mar, a new tournament in the Alps Tour 2024 schedule, which is being held at Club de Golf Playa Serena in Almería, Spain, began this morning from Holes 1 and 10 at 8:00 a.m. local time. Players were able to compete in perfect weather conditions as it was a sunny day with light winds and a temperature around 25 °C. This allowed the players in the field to take advantage of optimal scoring opportunities.

Round 1 Player Quotes

Eemil Alajarvi, 24, from Finland, co-leads after round 1 of the 2024 Alps de Roquetas de Mar with a first-round score of 5 under-par, 65. He has earned numerous top-10 finishes since he began playing on the Alps Tour but is now looking to break through and earn his first win. His best finish was a 2nd place at the 2022 Aravell Golf Open. During today’s round, Alajarvi made a total of 6 birdies and 1 bogey. After his round, Alajarvi commented on how: “It feels good to play well on the first tournament day, but tomorrow is a new day, so I have to be ready tomorrow as well.”  He added that he found: “The course is in very good condition. I played here last year on the Challenge Tour, and then there were some problems with the greens, but now those are now perfect. It plays a bit easier than last year because there is not so deep rough now than last year. On this golf course, there are a couple of difficult holes, but otherwise, the course is quite simple, so I think that the winning score will be in accordance with it.”

Ireland’s Paul McBride, 28, finds himself in the lead alongside Alajarvi after round 1 of the 2024 Alps de Roquetas de Mar. During today’s opening round, he shot a 5 under-par, 65 with 4 birdies and 2 bogeys on the front nine and 3 birdies on the back nine to end his round. He has earned numerous top 5 finishes since he began playing on the Alps TourMcBride’s best finish so far this season is an 18th place at the 2024 Gösser Open. After his round, McBride was extremely satisfied with the day, “I played very well today. Hit the ball very well which is key around this course, I think. I found this course feels longer than courses we’ve played in recent weeks. I think driving is important this week as you can give yourself a lot of good opportunities from the fairway.” He added that he found that: “playing this morning was good but the weather is the same tomorrow so it will probably even itself out.”When asked about the potential winning score on Friday, McBride commented: “I’m not sure what the winning score will be. It is so difficult to tell as the weather on Friday looks very windy. We will see what happens.”

This week’s competitors are battling for an overall prize fund of €40,000 and 45,000 Order of Merit points. The Winner of the 2024 Alps de Roquetas de Mar will earn €5,800.00 and 6,525 Order of Merit points.

Como, May 24th 2023- After the 1st round at the 2023 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon, we have a tight leaderboard. Netherland’s Kiet Van der Weele leads the way after a bogey-free 7 under-par 63. Tied for 2nd place only 2 strokes back: Finland’s Eemil Alajarvi and Spain’s Manuel Morugan.  There is a 6-way tied for 4th place at 4 under-par that includes: Spain’s Asier Aguirre Izcue, Italian amateur Mattia Comotti, France’s Alexandre Daydou, Netherland’s Lars Keunen, Italy’s Filippo Bergamaschi and his compatriot Elia Dallanegra (am).

The first round at the 2023 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon, being played at Golf Club La Pinetina in Como, Italy started with pleasant weather conditions. It was a sunny day with occasional clouds and some light winds with temperatures around 22°C. However, in the early afternoon, the weather became overcast with some thunderstorms in the area. At 7:04 pm play was suspended due to inclement weather in the area with only a few groups per side left to conclude their round. Luckily play resumed at 7:30pm which allowed the players to finish the 1st round. Some moderate rain is expected for tomorrow especially in the morning but for Friday’s final round a beautiful sunny day is forecasted with temperatures around 27°C.

Round 1 Player Quotes –

Netherland’s Kiet Van der Weele, 22 years old leads by 2 strokes after his great 1st round at the 2023 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon. He shot a bogey-free, 7 under-par opening round. He currently sits in 3rd place in the Order of Merit Rank and captured his 1st professional win at the 2023 Alps de Las Castillas which took place at the end of April. Van der Weele was really happy with his performance at the conclusion of his 1st round: “My game was really good today, I started off well, I made a nice putt on 1 to kickstart the round, I teed off on 10. My putting and short game was really good and it needs to be like that to make a bogey-free round. My game is in a good place right now and I would like to take advantage.” He went on to add on how his home course in the Netherlands is very similar to GC La Pinetina“The course is really beautiful, especially the back nine. There are some holes that are very pretty with a lot of trees. This course is more strategic and you need to be very precise using a lot of irons of the tees. The rough is nice and high so your short game needs to be good if you want a good round. I really like it and I’m very comfortable on it as it’s very similar to my home course.” Van der Weele plans on “taking it a day at the time and playing one shot at a time and one hole at a time for the next two rounds. Tomorrow is a new day and I will go from scratch and see what happens. I obviously would like to win another event, that’s my nature but I will try to play my best and see what the outcome will be.”Eemil Alajarvi from Finland, 23 years old, concluded his 1st round with a 5 under-par 65 and is one of the two players tied for 2nd place only 2 strokes back. He made 1 eagle, 4 birdies and 1 bogey in his round. He turned professional in 2021 and this is his third season playing on the Alps Tour. After his round, Alajarvi commented on how well he played, “It was a solid day. I hit very well from the tee so it was easy to get good birdie chances. I enjoy playing here, I think the course fits me very well. The last tournament was very rainy in Austria, so I’m not worried about the forecast. Obviously, my goal for the season is to earn one of the cards that will allow me to gain access to the Challenge Tour next season.”

Spain’s Manuel Morugan who represents Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf is the second player tied for 2nd place at 5 under-par. He made 3 birdies on the front nine and 2 birdies, 1 eagle and 2 bogeys on the back nine for a 65. Morugan has obtained numerous good results on the Alps Tour over the years and captured his first win on the tour last season at the 2022 Abruzzo Alps Open.

In the 6-way tied currently for 4th place at 4 under-par: Spain’s Asier Aguirre Izcue, Italian amateur Mattia Comotti, France’s Alexandre Daydou, Netherland’s Lars Keunen and Italy’s Filippo Bergamaschi and his compatriot Elia Dallanegra (am).

The first round was suspended at 17:41 due to dangerous weather in the area and resumed at 18:41 (1 hour).

When Koen concluded his bogey-free 8 under-par round 63 he was very pleased and commented his game by saying, “I was solid all the way around with a decent putter and a consistent straight long irons which you need on this type of course. The greens are slightly smaller than usual but they are very good.” Koen hopes to conclude this week with a win but knows he “needs to stay in the process and not look at the results to quickly. It is very hard to finish it off so I need stay focused and not get carried away by the results.”

Jacobo Pastor currently 33 years old and a past winner on the Alps Tour shot a 7 under-par round today which included 9 birdies and 2 bogeys. After his round today, Pastor was pleased to comment on how well he played today, “I am very happy with today’s result. Starting with a -7 is fantastic and I hope to keep it going the rest of the week. Each player has its own strategy this week because you need to be straight from the tee shots otherwise you’ll be penalized and I prefer to hit a lot of 3 woods to have short irons into these greens to have more birdie opportunities.”  Pastor also said he started this season with a lot of expectations and wasn’t playing well but after being forced to stay home 2 weeks from having contracted COVID-19, he was able to re-evaluate his strategy and work method. He now “hopes this is the start of something very good.”

Italy’s Stefano Pitoni, 32 years old, a past winner on the Alps Tour had a consistent round today with 32 shots on the front nine and 32 shots on the back nine for a total 7 under-par 64. In his round, he had 1 eagle, 1 bogey and a total of 6 birdies. After his round, Stefano commented, “I am very happy about today, you have to be very precise of the tee on this course which I’m glad I was. I hit some amazing second shots and got lucky holing a couple long putts.”

Finland’s Eemil Alajarvi only 22 years old and playing his 7th event of this season had a great start to his first round here at the inaugural 2022 Molinetto Alps Open.  His round included 8 birdies and just one bogey for a 7 under-par 64. After his round, Alajarvi commented on how well he played and how his game fitted this course. He said, “I played very solid and hit a lot of good approach shots and that made it easy to have a lot of birdie opportunities. I really like Molinetto Golf Club and it’s very good for my game as I don’t hit it very long but I hit it very straight so it fits my game very well.”

Among the 144 players competing this week you’ll find 130 professionals and 14 amateurs. The tournament winner will earn 6,525 Order of Merit points and 5,800 €. The players will be competing for a prize fund of 40.000 € and 45,000 Order of Merit points.
