He followed his opening-round of 6 under-par, with a 5 under-par in the second round for a two-day total of 11 under-par. He turned professional in 2017 and hopes to make a final move in the Alps Tour Order of Merit to try and regain his Challenge Tour card at next week’s event. He has been playing very consistent throughout the season and hopes to breakthrough with a win before the season ends. When Andrea concluded his round, he was very pleased on how he played today: “My long game was very good today, I hit a lot of good shots into the greens for birdies. I putted very well on the front nine holes and then it was steady on the back nine. I’m overall extremely pleased about today’s round and who knows what will happen tomorrow.”  He also commented on how “my long game has been solid all season, my putting is what I struggled with the most but the last couple of events it seems like it’s finally coming around.” Andrea went on to add that he wants to “remain focused on these next two events of the season and see what happens before making any plans for the future.”

Spain’s Mario Galiano Aguilar followed his opening round of 5 under-par 67 with a 6 under-par 66 for a two-day total of 11 under-par, which allows him to be in a tie for the lead entering tomorrow’s final round.  He made 1 eagle and 3 birdies on the front nine holes and 2 birdies and a single bogey on the back nine. Mario commented after his round that his: “iron play has been very good this week. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about my driving but when I do put the ball in play, I’ve been making a lot of birdies. My putter has been working well good also.” On how he will approach tomorrow, he plans on “trying to do the same tomorrow. Put the ball in the fairways as much as possible and I know I can have a chance to win. Tomorrow will definitely be a day where I can learn a lot and I’m excited to see what will happen.”

England’s Ben Schmidt shot an incredible bogey-free 8 under-par round today for a two-day total of 10 under-par and be in a tie for 3rd place only 1 stroke off the lead entering tomorrow’s final round. I holed a few long putts and made some clutch savers. When I missed the green, I got up and down. I had the same game plan and yesterday felt it was good so just stuck to that and I will be doing the same for tomorrow.” He found that the course was “playing very similar to yesterday, greens fairly soft which means could fire at the pins and the ball was stopping.” Ben also told said he feels like he’s been hitting his driver very well over the past 2 days which is important on this course, “on this course if you are straight off the tee then you will always have a chance because the course isn’t so long but if you don’t put it in play then you can struggle.”

Alexander Kopp from Austria is tied for 3rd place alongside Ben Schmidt at 10 under-par and only 1 stroke off the lead. He shot a second round of 5 under-par 67 with 8 birdies and 3 bogeys. At the conclusion of Alexander’s round, he was very happy with his first two round here at the 2022 Castelconturbia Alps Open.  “I unfortunately hit some bad drives off the tee today but my short game was very solid. I didn’t take a lot of risks today and had a good strategy which helped me put together today’s round.” He’s already secured his Challenge Tour card for next season, but he wanted “to compete this week to gain some confidence back. The last few tournaments I slightly lost it so I wanted to come back and compete on a course I’m familiar with the regain some confidence. He shot an incredible bogey-free round with 3 birdies on the front nine and 4 birdies on the back nine. After his bogey-free round, Augustin commented on how: “the pins were interesting on the par 3 today, smart golf was required to be on the right side. It is a great course, you don’t need to hit it very far of the tee, but you need to hit it in the good area of the course to make birdies, and if not, bogeys can come very easily.” He was “very pleased with this bogey-free round, I was able to hit the correct side of the course and had very very good putting.”

It was very rewarding.” Daniel went on to comment how he’s really enjoying the course: “It’s the first time the Alps Tour competes here, I really like this course, I like the conditions of the course, I like the greens even though they are tricky as they reward good putting. After signing one of the few under par rounds of the day, Saracino was rationalized that:“Today I played really well, I actually played better than yesterday but unfortunately my putter didn’t help me and 3 putted twice from short range. My long game is really good, I hope tomorrow there will be less wind. This course is already very difficult in good conditions so the wind we have today it made it even harder. I’m very positive about tomorrow for another good round because my game has been very good.” He expects the “winning score be at 7 under-par especially if the weather conditions will be like today with the very strong wind. Obviously, I would like to be on top tomorrow afternoon with the 7 under-par winning score.”

Netherland’s Davey Porsius shot an amazing bogey-free round in tough conditions to co-lead entering the final round. His round included 1 birdie and an eagle on his finishing hole for a two-day total of 3 under-par.  Porsius has been playing well lately and is looking to finally breakthrough with his first Alps Tour victory. After his bogey-free round, he was very satisfied and commented:“I was expecting some wind but definitely not this much wind. I struck the ball very well. It’s not easy on these fairways and greens. I kept it in play and rolled in a lot of putts today. Hopefully I’ll get it done tomorrow after some rest and practice now.” Porsius had some previous experience on this course, having played here as an amateur in the past: “I played this course 7 years ago as an amateur on a work trip and I remembered this course being very sloppy and tough and my memory was right. This course though is very enjoyable, if you hit good shots you will get rewarded and so far this week I’m enjoying it a lot.”

St.Omer, June 30th 2022– France’s Edouard Espana has a 1 shot lead after Round 1 at the 2022 Hauts de France- Pas de Calais Golf Open co-sanctioned event with a 3 under-par 68. France’s Franck Daux, amateur Julien Sale and Italy’s Andrea Saracino are in a three-way tie for 2nd place at 2 under-par. In a tie for 5th place at 1 under-par: Davide Buchi, Sander Aadusaar, Theo Boulet (am), Eemil Alajarvi, Manuel Morugan and Vince Van Veen.

It was a difficult day with complicated scoring conditions for the first round of the tournament at Aa Saint- Omer Golf Club near Saint- Omer, France. It began as a cold, windy and overcast morning which then developed into a cold consistent rain throughout the afternoon until the sunshine started peeking through towards the end of the round. Play began at 7:30 this morning from both the 1st and 10th hole. The Alps Tour players are playing the golf course as a 6182 meters par 71. The LETAS players are playing the golf course as a par 73.

The 2022 Hauts de France – Pas de Calais Golf Open is a co-sanctioned tournament between players from the Alps Tour and LET Access Series. The event is being played on the same course with alternating tee times between the Alps Tour players and LETAS players. The players are competing for two different dedicated prize funds and thus trophies.

First Round Players Quotes-

Edouard Espana, France shot a 3 under-par 68 round with 4 birdies and 2 bogeys to have a 1 shot lead at the conclusion of the first round. After his round, he commented on how tough the conditions were today: “I’m very happy with my day, it was not easy today, there was a lot of rain, also the pin positions weren’t easy for a first round so you had to be very concentrated right away.”  When asked which part of his game helped him the most during the round, Edouard commented: “I didn’t make any mistakes with my long game today, on this course you need to focus on hitting the correct part of the greens and forget the pins which is what I did today. My short game was crucial for putting together my score.” He also mentioned on how, “The course is difficult, you have to hit good shots and make good choices. You have to have your entire game very solid to have a round under par on this course. That’s what happened for me today and I’m very happy. Now I want to rest and concentrate on tomorrow’s round so I can be rested and refocused to start again with the same mindset and game plan.”

France’s Franck Daux shot a 2 under-par 69 round today with 3 birdies and a single bogey to be in a three-way tie for 2ndplace. He is currently playing a good stretch of golf and finished 3rd in the 2022 Open de la Mirabelle d’Or. After his round, Franck commented on his performance: “I’ve played here many times when it was a Challenge Tour event and I’ve had some success here over the years. I think I know how to manage the course, this isn’t the typical course we are used to playing. On every shot you need to be focused on how you want to execute it and where to place each tee shot. Also, being aggressive on this course will not reward you. I think it’s why I played well. It is a very strategic course.” He wants to keep the same game plan tomorrow considering similar conditions:“I just want to place some good tee shots and play safe and always remember that a par is good on this course.”

Julien Sale, French amateur and currently 2nd in the Order of Merit is also in the three-way tie only 1 shot off the lead with a 2 under-par, 69. He finished 2nd last week and is continuing his positive play this week. In today’s round, he had a steady front nine and then 3 birdies and 1 bogey on the back nine. After the round, Julien was very happy with himself, especially with how he dealt with his patience in the tough conditions he had to face. “The key of today’s round was patience. The course isn’t easy in good conditions so today I just tried to be very patient with myself and do one shot at the time and see what happens at the end, which turned out pretty good.”  He is enjoying the opportunity to have the LETAS players compete on the same course as the men’s: “It’s really cool to have the ladies here, it’s cool to see them play the same course as we do and see how their score compares to ours.”

Italy’s Andrea Saracino is the final player in the three-way tie for 2nd place with a first-round score of 2 under-par. He commented at the conclusion of his round how: “The course is very difficult especially due to the weather conditions, the rain and the wind. The greens are very difficult but my putting worked really well today. I made a lot of clutch par putts and I’m happy with my birdie on the final hole.”

In a tie for 5th place at 1 under-par and 2 shots from the lead: Davide Buchi, Sander Aadusaar, Theo Boulet (am), Eemil Alajarvi, Manuel Morugan and Vince Van Veen.

Lipold was very pleased after the round and did not expect to play as well due to an ongoing injury. After his round, he happily commented: “This round comes at a pretty unexpected time as I had to take a break before this tournament due to an injury which is still ongoing. Today things just worked out for me. I 3-putted on 17 and then was able to bounce back immediately which got the momentum going.” Lipold’s 2 eagles today included a hole out on the 4th hole: “I eagled Hole 1 which was a kickstarted for me. Then the eagle on the 4th was the icing on the cake when I holed out my pitching wedge from 135m.” He feels very blessed to be in contention entering the final round and is focused on having a good finish at this tournament to see what happens next.

American Legends Tour player, Clark Dennis had a bogey-free 6 under-par round today for an overall 11 under-par and 3 shots back of the lead. Dennis turned professional in 1986 and has played on the Nationwide Tour, on the PGA Tour, and currently plays on the Legends Tour as well as the Champions Tour. Dennis commented “I played very solid so far this week. This is a very fun event being able to play with the younger generation and would love to see more events like this.” He also mentioned, “On courses like this week, that are shorter and tighter having the experience us Legends Tour players definitely helps. I was able to use my experience and place my shots to put together a good round.” Dennis is satisfied with the week so far, especially being able to get some good competitive reps in as he is preparing to play in the Senior PGA Championship in a few weeks.

Markus Brier, from Austria, one of the five Legends Tour players competing this week shot a 6 under-par, bogey-free round for an overall 11 under-par and 3 shots back of his compatriot’s lead. Brier, turned professional in 1995 and is a multiple winner on the Challenge Tour and on the European Tour. Brier has some previous experience on this golf course, “I’ve played this event many times and know this course well, that is one of the reasons why I’m playing this week.” He is grateful to his short game for his good scoring so far, “My putter and short game have been amazing, I haven’t missed any short putts and made good recovery when I was in trouble. I don’t hit it very long but thanks to my short game I’m able to be competitive with the younger guys.”

Andrea Saracino of Italy, had a wonderful bogey-free 6 under-par round 66 for an overall 10 under-par for the tournament and 4 shots back of Lukas Lipold’s lead.  When Saracino completed his round, he was happy especially with the weather in his draw, “My long game was very solid which allowed me to hit a lot of shots close and have birdie chances. I was very lucky with the draw and happy to have taken advantage. Saracino hopes to earn his Challenge Tour card back by finishing in the Top 5 Alps Tour Order of Merit at the end of the season, therefore his goal is to have a good finish this week.

Italy’s Stefano Mazzoli, had 6 birdies and 1 bogey in his round and is also 4 shots back of the lead. Mazzoli’s last win comes at the 2022 Ein Bay Open and is currently second in the Alps Tour Order of Merit. He has been playing consitent this entire tournament and was happy with his round today to get back in contention. “I was mentally at ease today compared to yesterday and that helped me shot a lower score. I’ve been playing well all week but struggling with my green reading.” Mazzoli is looking “forward to another positive round tomorrow and hope it won’t rain a lot. I will focus on my strategy of placing my tee shots to have a lot of birdie opportunities.”
