James Sugrue leads after Round 1 at the 2024 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by AON.
Como, May 8th, 2024 – After the 1st round at the 2024 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by AON, we have a tight leaderboard. Ireland’s James Sugrue leads the way after a bogey-free 6 under-par 64. Tied for 2nd place only 1 stroke back: France’s Alexandre Daydou and Austria’s Lukas Lipold. There is a 5-way tied for 4th place at 4 under-par that includes: France’s Xavier Poncelet and Benjamin Kedochim and Italy’s Mattia Comotti, Enrico Di Nitto and Gianmaria Rean Trinchero.
The first round of the 2024 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon, being played at Golf Club La Pinetina in Como, Italy, began at 7:30 am local time from the 1st and 10th hole. For the majority of the day, players had favorable weather conditions during today’s 1st round, with mostly sunny skies, some light winds, and temperatures around 23° Celsius. However, at 5:40 pm local time, play was suspended due to inclement weather in the area. At 7:00 pm local time, play resumed, and players were able to conclude the first round of the tournament before daylight expired.
This year, we reach the 10th edition of the event which has been a consistent stop on the Alps Tour schedule since 2014. In 2020, it was the only year the event wasn’t played due to Covid-19. The tournament is named after and dedicated to highly acclaimed golf instructor, Giorgio Bordoni who unexpectedly passed away in 2013 at the age of 48.

James Sugrue, 27, from Ireland, leads after the first round of the 2024 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by AON with a bogey-free, 6 under-par, 64. He teed off on the 10th hole where he made 1 eagle and 2 birdies, after making the turn, he went on to make 2 more birdies to conclude his day. He turned professional at the beginning of 2020; however, due to the pandemic, this is his 3rd full season playing on the Alps Tour. After his round, Sugrue commented on how: “I haven’t played a competitive round in about 9 months, so it’s good to be able to refresh, and I was really looking forward to this week. To be honest, even last night, I couldn’t wait for today to come. I was bogey-free today, and to be honest, I didn’t look like I was going to make a bogey today. Everything was good, my iron play probably stood out a little for the rest, but everything was sharp.” Last night, there was some heavy rainfall over Golf Club La Pinetina which softened the course: “the overnight rain did soften out the course, but it was playing great. The greens were very true and brilliant to putt on.” Sugrue plans on: “heading to Lake Como tonight for dinner, and then I plan to enjoy the next two rounds out here and see where that will take me.”
France’s Alexandre Daydou, 27, is one of the two players tied for 2nd place after the first round of the 2024 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by AON. He shot a bogey-free 5 under-par,65 round today, making 4 birdies on the front nine and 1 on the back nine. He turned professional in 2016, is a past winner on the Alps Tour, and has earned numerous top-10 finishes over the years. Daydou was happy with his performance at the conclusion of his 1st round: “It was a good round, it was a bogey-free round for me where I didn’t make too many mistakes. It was a serene round, that’s for sure. I handled the course well and feel like I hit some very good tee shots and holed some important putts. I’m overall very happy with how today went.” He went on to add that he found: “the course this year to be playing slightly longer and different than the past couple of years that’s for sure. It is however in overall great conditions.” For the next two rounds, Daydou wants to: “stay focused on my gameplan, it’s a course I believe you can’t be too aggressive but need to handle the par 3s and par 4s well as some are tricky. The par 5s are relatively easy, so those are birdie holes.”
Lukas Lipold, 30, from Austria, who turned professional at the end of 2019, is the second player in the two-way tie for 2nd place after round 1 of the 2024 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by AON. During today’s round, he made 2 birdies and 1 bogey on the front nine and once he made the turn, he made 4 birdies in a row from hole 12-15 before the weather delay. Once play resumed, he made a bogey on the 17th hole and then concluded his round with a birdie on the last hole. Lipold has earned various top finishes over the years but is looking to earn his 1st victory on the Alps Tour. After his round, Lipold commented: “I had a very solid day. I always like coming back to this course in La Pinetina. I didn’t make a lot of mistakes today, I stayed patient and was definitely rewarded on the back nine.” He added that he would have: “liked to finish before the weather delay after making 4 birdies in a row, but that’s just how it goes sometimes. It’s always a bit tough after a delay to start playing again. I made a poor swing on hole 17, which ended up in a bogey, but I’m very happy to finish with a birdie on the tough 18th hole.” Lipold also explained on how: “I’m playing very solid this year so far, I’m putting and chipping well which is probably the biggest difference to last season. I’m looking forward to the next 2 days.”
The highlight of the day belongs to Italy’s Luca Lunardon, who made an incredible Hole-In-One on the 157 meters, par 3, 5th hole with an 8-iron.
The players are competing for an overall prize fund of €40,000 and 45,000 Order of Merit points. The winner of the 2024 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by AON will walk away with €5,800.00 and 6,525 Order of Merit points.
Round 2
The second round of the 2024 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by AON will begin again at 7:30 am local time from the 1st and 10th hole. Once Round 2 is completed, a cut will be made to the top 40 players and ties.
Round 1 leader James Sugrue will begin round 2 of the tournament at 1:36 p.m. local time from hole 1.

Kiet Van der Weele extends his lead at the 2023 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon.
After some heavy overnight rain fell over Golf Club La Pinetina, host of the 2023 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon the second round play began at 7:30 am from both the 1st and 10th hole. Due to the overnight rain, today players had to face a course with slightly softer but still in very good conditions thanks to the work performed by head superintendent Roberto de Maestri and his team. It was an overcast day with the sun trying to peak through with barely any winds and temperatures in the mid 20°Cs. For tomorrow’s final round, a beautiful sunny day is expected with temperatures reaching around 27°C.
Kiet Van der Weele from Netherland continues to lead after two rounds at the 2023 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon with a two-day total of 14 under-par. He made 4 birdies on the front nine and 4 birdies and 1 bogey during his round today for a 7 under-par,63. He is 22 years old and turned professional in September 2022. He has had a positive start to the season with numerous good finishes and captured a win at the 2023 Alps de Las Castillas. After his round, he was very happy about his comeback after “the bogey on the 15th hole I missed an up and down which was a shame but coming back strong with a birdie on 16 was good. I can say my game is really sharp at the moment and in a good place so it makes me enjoy playing event more.” Van der Weele finds himself very comfortable around GC La Pinetina “I really like the trees around this golf course and I’m able to see the shots I need to hit very clearly. It’s a really beautiful course and makes me at ease.” Looking ahead to the final round tomorrow with a 7 shots lead, he added: “it would be a lot to win another event so early in the season, it would be really nice and would allow me to have some comfort for the rest of the year. I have some Challenge Tour events I’ll be playing in as well so hopefully I’ll have enough room to play in them but I will for sure take it step by step and evaluating things as the season goes on.”
France’s Augustin Hole, 25 years old who represents Biarritz Le Phare shot a 6 under-par 64 in today’s round for a two-day total of 7 under-par. He finds himself in 2nd place 7 shots off the lead. He made 4 birdies on the front nine holes and 3 birdies and 1 bogey on the back nine. After the round, Hole commented on how “I think the course was playing slightly easier today, it was softer and I think some of the pins were more accessible.” Tomorrow, he wants to “focus on myself, I have a lot of work to do to catch the leader. I need to focus on my own game and see what will happen. My putting has been very solid for the entire week, I barely missed any putts under three meters. Hopefully that will keep going tomorrow.”
Italy’s Elia Dallanegra (am), 19 years old, who was tied for 4th place after yesterday’s 1st round, finds himself tied for 3rdplace with a two-day total of 6 under-par. He shot a 2 under-par 68 today with 4 birdies and 2 bogeys. After the round, Dallanegra proudly commented: “It’s been two great rounds so far, my game has been steady but I’ve been very lucky on the greens making a lot of putts and today I even holed out a bunker shot on the 4th hole. I’m very pleased overall.” When asked about the course conditions after the heavy overnight rain, he went on to add: “I believe the conditions today as slightly easier than yesterday, there is barely any wind but the course is definitely softer and we aren’t getting as much roll but the greens were perfect so it was easier to hole putts today.”
Enrico Di Nitto from Italy shot another 3 under-par round today for a two-day total of 6 under-par and be tied for 3rd place entering tomorrow’s final round. During today’s round, Di Nitto made 1 eagle on the par 5 8th hole, 2 birdies and 1 bogey. He has been constantly near the top of the leaderboards in the majority of the events so far this season and his most recent result was a tied for 4th place at the 2023 Gösser Open. Di Nitto after his second 3 under-par was satisfied even though it was a different 3 under-par compared to yesterday: “Yesterday I played really well and had a horrible finish. Today instead I had a slow start and didn’t play as well as yesterday but managed to finish my round with an eagle on my 17th hole, the 8th of the course. My putting has been very solid as of lately and now I only need to be able to put the entire tournament together and hopefully something good will happen.” When looking ahead to the final round tomorrow “I will focusing on having another good warm-up session, a good putting session and then go out and see what will happen.”
France’s Alexandre Daydou, 26 years old is tied in 3rd place at 6 under-par alongside Dallanegra (am) and Di Nitto. He shot a 2 under-par 68 today with 5 birdies and 3 bogeys.
Italian amateur Luca Rimauro had the highlight of the day making a hole-in-one during today’s second round on the par 3 17th hole from 158 meters with an 8 iron.
The low round of the day belongs to current leader Kiet Van der Weele with a 7 under-par 63.
Final Round-
The final round of the 2023 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon will begin at 8:10 am local time from the 1st and 10th hole.
A total of 51 players made the cut which was set at 140 (E). The final group will tee off at 9:38 am local time from the 1st hole.
The winner of the 2023 Memorial Giorgio Bordoni presented by Aon, will earn the winning check of €5,800 and 6,525 Order of Merit points.

Frenchman Alexandre Daydou wins the Alps de Andalucía
Alexandre Daydou (FRA) won the Alps de Andalucía today at La Monacilla Golf Club in Aljaraque, Spain, with a total of -10.
« I’m a bit unhappy because I felt I had a good chance. But that’s the way it is in golf » Portugal’s Miguel Gaspar said. « I feel pretty good about my game in general. I played really good on the first day, I did not make any mistakes. I did not play very well in round 2. And today it was about the same, I did not hit the ball very well. I had a provisional today and I did not hit the ball quite well in the last 4 or 5 holes » he explained. Gaspar made 3 birdies and a bogey in the final round.
« I’m happy with my result. The day went well, I played well, so it’s rather positive for me » Frenchman Louis Cohen Boyer said. « I would have liked to get closer to Alexandre but he played very well today. I missed an important putt for birdie on hole 17. I think it’s one of the only holes on the course where you can make a break from the others. My putt was 2m50 long but I missed it » he explained. Cohen Boyer made 4 birdies and 2 bogeys in the final round.
Marcus Mohr (ENG) still leads the Order of Merit, the Alps Tour official season ranking. Louis Cohen Boyer moves up to second place with today’s finish while Alexandre Daydou jumps to 4th place on the Order of Merit after his win today.
Weather conditions were sunny with some wind and temperatures in the mid 20s.
Rising golf stars of the Alps Tour will now travel to Metz, France, for the Open International de la Mirabelle d’Or starting on June 21st.

Daydou soared in La Cala
France’s Alexandre Daydou shot a 6 under par card on Asia course, -10 total, to lead the Q School Finale by 2 shots over fellow countryman Victor Perez.
Daydou, 20, scored flawless card on Asia course, six birdies to take command going into final round. The young man, born in La Réunion island, is one of the young French talented amateurs. He came in Spain with one goal, gain a full Alps Tour category for 2016.
« My game plan was simple and I stuck to it. I worked on it with my coach, Renaud Gris. Here, you have to be careful with tee shots and that was my routine for these past 2 rounds. I kept of targeting the safe places on fairways to have good angles to hit the greens.
Most of the time, I did not hit the driver and I have to admit it was a good thing because I am so sick, sinusitis, that I would not have been able to finish my round. »
On his toes, Victor Perez, 23 year old from Tarbes, South of France. He graduated from University of New Mexico last June and had a win there as a freshman. He came back to Europe as he just missed by one shot the Canadian Tour card during Q School and is delighted to be play to play well in La Cala.
« My game was very solid on my first nine, from 10th to 18th. Pins positions were difficult on the 17th and 18th so I did not go for them. From the first hole of my back nine, I have admit a little lack of focusing, same rythm of play, warm temperature, I saved 2 pars on holes 3 and 4. Then I had a nice eagle on the 5th then erased by a double bogey on the next hole, a bad bounce. But all in all a nice day and as I played first stage, I am getting to know Asia course pretty well now. »
Spain’s Roberto Sebastian -7 total and Javier Gallegos -6, are respectively 3rd and 4th, one shot further, a group of 4 players tie for 5th place, England’s Ben Wheeler, Spain’s Gonzalo Gancedo and Italy’s Nicholas De Pedrazzi (am) and Federico Colombo.
The cut felt at exactly 65 players at +4. The youngest player of the field, Austria’s Laurids Lohr, 16, missed by only one.
