Round 2 Player Quotes

Spain’s Albert Boneta (am), 22, concludes his round 2 of the 2024 Alps de Las Castillas in the lead by 1 stroke. He shot a 6 under-par, 66 in today’s round 2 making 7 birdies and 1 bogey for a two-day total of 18 under-par. In yesterday’s opening round, he shot an incredible 12 under-par, 60 which tied the tournament course record set at Golf Lerma. He recently graduated in Finance and Psychology at New Mexico University and plans to turn professional later this year. After his round, Boneta was satisfied even though: “I’m tired, it’s been such a long day, but I’ve played well all day. I was able to avoid getting in trouble and suffer much and I managed to hole some very good putts.” He added that he believes the “key to my round was on the first hole. I hit a nice tee shot to green but bounced to the bunker, then to green, and I holed it for the first birdie of the round, so that was a good start which allowed me to not be nervous. I must say I wasn’t nervous at all, I just kept playing my game.” Boneta also mentioned that this is only his 3rd time competing in a professional tournament and “of course, I will be nervous. It will be the first time that I tee off in the final round as a leader. I will just do my best and enjoy the day.” Boneta plans on “turning professional later this summer after competing in some amateur events I want to take part in.”

Amateur Nathan Legrendre, 22, from France, is only 1 stroke from the 2nd round lead after day two at the 2024 Alps de Las Castillas. He followed his unbelievable opening round of 12 under-par, 60 with a 5 under-par, 67 in today’s round 2 for a two-day total of 17 under-par. Today, he began his day on hole 10, where he went on to make 1 birdie and 1 bogey. Once he made the turn to the course’s front nine holes, Legendre went on to make 5 birdies which 3 in a row to end his round. Thanks to yesterday’s incredible round of 12 under-par, 60, Legendre now holds the tournament course record at Golf Lerma. After his 2nd round, Legendre was very pleased even though: “The first nine holes I didn’t play very well, I made a lot of mistakes unfortunately. However, on my back nine, I was able to play much more like I did yesterday. My game was more solid, and it was obviously seen in my score. I must admit that I was a bit nervous at the beginning of the round, but it eased off throughout the day.” Legendre is still competing as an amateur this week and is playing on turning professional later this summer. He decided to remain amateur until now, “to have the possibility to be selected by the French National Team to compete in the European Team Championships that are being played this week in Italy. I guess now I can say in the end that it was a good thing that I wasn’t picked.”  He added that: “It’s hard to guess what the winning score will be, I think it could get very low. Tomorrow, I plan on staying as close to the lead as possible from the beginning until the end of the round, and we will see what happens.”

Final Round

A total of 54 players made the cut which was set at 140 (-4).

The Final Round of the 2024 Alps de Las Castillas will begin at 8:30 a.m. local time from the 1st and 10th hole.  The Final Pairing will tee off at 9.58 a.m. local time from the 1st hole. In case of a tie after 54 holes, a sudden-death play-off will determine the winner.

With today’s amazing 12 under-par, 60, Legendre now holds the tournament course record at Golf de Lerma, which was previously set at 8 under-par. After his fabulous round, Legendre was ecstatic: “Today was an incredible round where I drove the ball and putted very well. I made almost no mistakes whatsoever and played the easy holes very well.” He added that he’s been playing well lately and found that the main difference in score comes from a “change of putter that occurred in mid-May. My putting has improved a lot in the last 2 months, and that’s how my scores have significantly improved.” Legendre also took the time to comment about this week’s host, Golf de Lerma“The course is quite short this week, which allows us to have lots of opportunities for birdies. The course is, however, in very good condition, the greens roll very well, and trust me, it’s a pleasure to be able to putt on fast greens this week.”  Legendre is still competing as an amateur, but: “This should be my last tournament. I’m preparing to turn professional this summer.” When asked to describe today’s round with a word, he responded: “accomplishment.”

Amateur Albert Boneta, 22, from Spain, co-leads alongside Legendre after the opening round of the 2024 Alps de Las Castillas with another unbelievable opening round of 12 under-par, 60. He recently graduated in Finance and Psychology at New Mexico University and plans to turn professional later this year. In his first round, Boneta made 2 eagles, 10 birdies, and 2 bogeys. He is continuing his good performance as he concluded last week’s event tied for 5thplace.  After his amazing first-round, Boneta commented on how today, he obviously played well but was “extremely satisfied on how great I putted great on the back 9, I did not get in trouble at all today and holed everything.” He also explained how he found: “This week’s course to be wide from the tee so it is easy not to get in trouble. There are courses that I just get more connected with, and this is one of those. I like how the ball rolls on the greens, and I found it easy to read them.” Boneta also talked about his he had a rough start, he was “+1 after the first 3 holes and then I was able to make a 4 meters putt on the 4th hole and that changed my momentum for the rest of the round. Overall, I must say that I’m playing well lately, I didn’t make any significant changes in my game, just a lot of practice especially on my putting.”

15th June 2024 | Alps Tour Golf

Vince Van Veen moves into the lead after Round 2 in France.

Metz, June 15th, 2024- After two rounds at the 21st Open International de la Mirabelle d’Or, we have a close leaderboard. Netherland’s Vince Van Veen moves into the lead with a two-day total of 8 under-par. In a three-way tie for 2nd place at 6 under-par: French amateur Nathan LegendreThéo Boulet, and Austria’s Maximilian Steinlechner.

It was a beautiful sunny day with some moderate wind gusts and a temperature that reached 19° Celsius that welcomed the players Golf Domaine de la Grange Aux Ormes near Metz, France, for the 2nd round of the 21st edition of the Open International de la Mirabelle d’Or.  Play began at 7:30 a.m. local time from the 1st and 10th hole.

This is the 21st edition of the tournament, and it has been part of the Alps Tour schedule since 2005.

Round 2 Player Quotes

Netherland’s Vince Van Veen, 27, is in the lead after two rounds at the 2024 Open International de la Mirabelle d’Or. He was in a two-way tie for 2nd place after yesterday’s round 1, and today he shot a 3 under-par, 67 with 5 birdies and 2 bogeys to move into the lead with a two-day total of 8 under-par. Van Veen won the 2022 Fred Olsen Alps de La Gomera title and is now looking to earn his 2nd title on the Alps Tour. His most recent best finish occurred at the 2024 Lacanau Alps Open, where he concluded the tournament tied for 3rd place. He has some luck here at Domaine de la Grange aux Ormes as he made a hole-in-one back in 2019 and made another hole-in-one during yesterday’s round 1.  After 3 under-par round, Van Veen commented: I played solid today, I must say that I hit some better shots in the wind compared to what I was able to do yesterday. The conditions were tougher today, as the wind got stronger, and it was gusty at times. So, I hit 2 more shots compared to yesterday, but honestly, it felt like a better round to me.” For tomorrow’s final round, he doesn’t “foresee any big changes to his game plan as the forecast should be similar to what we’ve experienced. To be honest, it’s tough to predict a winning score as the wind has blown firmly, but I would say around 14 or 15 under-par.” Van Veen is already: “proud of myself, so winning tomorrow would just give me a trophy to take home, but I am very proud of my game and the work I’ve put in.”

French amateur, Nathan Legendre, 22, moves into a 3-way tie for 2nd place after round 2 of the 2024 Open International de la Mirabelle d’Or. He was tied for 26th place at even par after the first round of the tournament but shot a great 6 under-par, 64 with 1 eagle, 6 birdies. and 2 bogeys to move into the 3-way tie for 2nd place with a two-day total of 6 under-par.

The winner of the 2024 Gösser Open, Austria’s Maximilian Steinlechner, 24, concludes his round 2 of the 2024 Open International de la Mirabelle d’Or in a 3-way tie for 2nd place with a total score of 6 under-par. He shot a 2nd round score of 2 under-par, 68 with 1 birdie and 2 bogeys on the front nine holes, and then once he made the turn, he made 5 more birdies and 1 double bogey to end his round.  After his 2nd round, Steinlechner commented that: “the conditions were difficult today with the strong and gusty winds this morning. I feel like I managed the challenges the round put in front of me fairly well, so I’m overall satisfied.” He added that he found that here at Domaine de la Grange aux Ormes“there is pretty much on every hole high rough which essentially plays like out of bounds to the left and right. So even though it might not be a long course, being aggressive off the tee can quickly backfire, especially with the wind we are having.” Looking ahead to tomorrow’s final round, where he has a chance to earn his 2nd trophy of the season, Steinlechnerexplained: “?it would be awesome, but there is some golf left to be played and anyone who has played golf knows what can happen. I like the position I’m in, though.”

Alongside Legendre and Steinlechner with a two-day total of 6 under-par, there is France’s Théo Boulet, 21. He shot a bogey-free, 7 under-par, 63 with 2 birdies on the front nine holes and 5 birdies on the back nine holes. After his bogey-free round, Boulet was extremely pleased: “It was a very good day, I played well on a really difficult day with the wind gusts on a demanding course. My putting was good I made a lot of putts, putts to save par too, that’s what helped me the most today.” Tomorrow, Boulet has a chance to earn his first Alps Tour title, “I’m going to stay focused on my game plan, I’m not going to change much. Obviously, depending on the weather conditions, but I’m going to stay focused and give it my all from holes 1 to 18. It would be incredible to win my first tournament especially this week in France, but I don’t want to think about it, I want to stay focused on my game and be in the present.”

Final Round

A total of 58 players made the cut which was set at +2 (138).

The Final Round of the 2024 Open International de La Mirabelle d’Or will begin at 9:11 a.m. local time from the 1st and 10th hole.  The Final Pairing will tee off at 10:50 a.m. local time from the 1st hole. In case of a tie after 54 holes, a sudden-death play-off will determine the winner.

The 2024 Open International de La Mirabelle d’Or winner will walk away with €5,800 and 6,525 Order of Merit points.
