Spain’s Jorge Maicas wins the 33rd edition of the Gösser Open!
Maria Lankowitz, May 17th, 2025- Spain’s Jorge Maicas captured the 2025 Gösser Open title following a two-hole sudden-death playoff. The Spaniard sealed the win with a birdie on the first playoff hole and a steady par on the second, edging out fellow Spaniard Asier Aguirre Izcue and Austria’s Timon Baltl. after the trio finished tied at 17 under-par. France’s Victor Trehet delivered the low round of the day, a flawless, bogey-free 9 under-par, 63 featuring one eagle and seven birdies to secure his fourth place.
The Final Round of the 2025 Gösser Open played at the beautiful, Golf Club Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz, Austria got underway at 9:10 a.m. local time from both the 1st and 10th hole. The final pairing began their last round at 10:16 a.m. local time from the 1st tee. Players battled through the final round beneath mostly cloudy skies, with patches of sunshine some gusty winds and a chilly temperature.
The Gösser Open occupies a distinguished place on the Alps Tour, not only as its longest-standing event but also as one of its most historically significant. First contested in 1993 at Steiermärkischer Golf Club Murhof, the tournament moved to its current venue, Golf Club Erzherzog Johann, in 2000. Since the establishment of the Alps Tour in 2001, the Gösser Open has featured prominently on the schedule and is widely regarded as Austria’s most traditional professional golf event.

I didn’t look at a leaderboard all day — I just wanted to stick to my strategy and focus on my own performance without being distracted by what others were doing. Like yesterday, I stayed patient on the greens, which was key on a course like this,” said Maicas after he secured the title. “This win is for my family, especially my mom — she’s always there encouraging me to keep going. It’s also for my team and friends, who have supported me from day one. I couldn’t have done it without them. I’ll celebrate now, it’s been a dream for a long time, but on Monday I’ll head to Lacanau for our next event. I’ll try to carry the same momentum and mindset into the week. I want to stay focused, stay calm, and hopefully have another strong performance.” Maicas added as he is enjoying the moment but looking ahead to next week.
Timon Baltl, 30 from Austria, concludes this week’s event in a 2-way tie for 2nd place alongside Spain’s Asier Aguirre Izcue with a three-day total of 17 under-par. Baltl shot a final round of 4 under-par, 68 with 5 birdies and 1 bogey, while Aguirre Izcue also shot a final round of 4 under-par, 68, making birdies on holes 3, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, and 17, a bogey on hole 14, and a costly double bogey on the 18th hole, which cost him the win and forced him to dispute the playoff. Aguirre Izcue continues to show strong form at Golf Club Erzherzog Johann, where he also finished runner-up in the 2024 edition.
Following the seventh event of the season, the 2025 Gösser Open, Spain’s Alvaro Hernandez Cabezuela continues to lead the Alps Tour Order of Merit with 15,258.45 points. Rocco Repetto remains in second place with 13,773.63 points, while Javier Barcos holds onto third with 12,812.65. Asier Aguirre Izcue moves up to fourth with 12,277.40 points, and Quentin Debove rounds out the top five with 11,482.65 points.
The biggest move in the Order of Merit rank this week, came from our winner, Jorge Maicas, who jumped 50 spots in the rankings to reach 9th place with 7,947.75 points.

Asier Aguirre Izcue and Timon Baltl Share the Lead Ahead of Final Round at the 2025 Gösser Open
Maria Lankowitz, May 16th 2025- Asier Aguirre Izcue of Spain and Austria’s own Timon Baltl, a past winner of the Gösser Open, will head into the final round of the 2025 Gösser Open tied at the top of the leaderboard at 13-under-par. Just two strokes behind, in solo third place at 11-under-par, is Spain’s Jorge Maicas, keeping the pressure on the leaders heading into the final round.
Round 2 of the 2025 Gösser Open continued today at its traditional host venue, Golf Club Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz, Austria. Players faced a mix of blue skies and scattered clouds, with steady wind gusts throughout the day. Temperatures were noticeably colder today, especially in the morning compared to previous days.
The Gösser Open is one of the most prestigious events on the Alps Tour calendar and holds the distinction of being the Tour’s longest-running tournament. It was first played in 1993 at Steiermärkischer Golf Club Murhof before relocating to its current home, Golf Club Erzherzog Johann, in 2000. Since the founding of the Alps Tour in 2001, the Gösser Open has been a consistent and significant fixture on the schedule. It is also widely recognized as the most traditional professional golf tournament in Austria.

Spain’s Asier Aguirre Izcue, 25, who was tied for the lead after yesterday’s opening round, carded a 6-under-par 66 in today’s second round to remain in a share of the lead with a two-day total of 13-under-par. He started strong making four birdies on his front nine (holes 1, 3, 7, and 8). After the turn, he made his only bogey of the day on the 10th hole, but quickly recovered by making birdies on holes 11, 13, and 16 to close out his round. Aguirre Izcue claimed his first Alps Tour victory last week in Italy and has continued to show strong form at this week’s venue, Golf Club Erzherzog Johann, where he finished runner-up in the 2024 edition after losing in a playoff—despite holding a share of the lead after the second round. After his round, Aguirre Izcue explained: “I’m very happy with my second round again—I’m playing solid all around right now. I’m feeling very confident, and last week’s win definitely gave me a big boost. I’m making a lot of birdies, which really helps when you want to put together good performances. There is no reason for me to complain about a 7-under yesterday and 6-under today, I’m honestly, very happy. Tomorrow, I’ll try to keep doing the same and hopefully, I can get my second win. Of course, that would be incredible, but I’ll stay focused on my game and see what happens.”
Timon Baltl, 30 from Austria, who won the Gösser Open in 2019 as well as having earned his HotelPlanner Tour card in 2020 thanks to the results he achieved on the Alps Tour in the 2019 season, co-leads after two-rounds with a two-day total of 13 under-par. He followed his opening round of 6 under-par, 66 with a 7 under-par, 65 that included 8 birdies (holes 1,3,5,7,9,10,11 and 13) and a bogey on the 17th hole. After his round, Baltl commented: “So far over the first two rounds, I’ve played really well from tee to green. I only made a few mistakes yesterday, and today I didn’t hit a single bad shot with my long game, so overall, I’m really pleased with my performance. Today was tricky, the wind was very gusty, and it was tough to get the right distances. Sometimes you had to adapt quickly because it kept changing and was hard to judge, but I managed it well. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow, I’m very excited to be tied for the lead. Getting a second win here would be amazing, but there are still 18 holes to play, and in golf, anything can happen. Every day is a new day.I’ll give it my best and hope to turn around the start of my season with a win here at home. But I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself—I’ll stay focused on my round. Hopefully, some spectators will come out and support us during tomorrow’s final round.”

Jorge Maicas, 27, from Spain, who was tied for 6th place after yesterday’s opening round, fired a 5-under-par 67 in today’s second round to move into solo third place with a two-day total of 11-under-par. He opened his round with a birdie on the 10th hole, then added two more on the 12th and 14th hole. On his back nine, he made an eagle on the 1sthole, a bogey on the 5th, and closed the round with a birdie on the 9th hole. Maicas has earned several strong finishes in recent seasons but is still seeking his first Alps Tour victory. “I must say on top of playing well and being solid from tee to green, I’ve been extremely patient on the greens. So far this week, my driving and putting have been very dialed in and have helped me a lot. The course is in great shape—this is my fourth time playing here, and it’s in the best condition I’ve ever seen it. Today, we had some strong wind gusts, which made a few holes even trickier,” said Maicas after his 5-under-par round. “I want to stay patient and not get carried away by the result. My focus is to stay in the moment and concentrate on my game from the 1st to the 18th hole. No matter the outcome, I want to walk off the course feeling proud of my performance,” he added, reflecting on his pursuit of a first career Alps Tour title.
A total of 42 players (40 professionals and 2 amateurs) made the cut which was set at 139 (-5). The Final Round will begin at 9:10 a.m. local time from the 1st and 10th hole. The Final Pairing will tee off at 10:16 a.m. local time from the 1st hole.
The winner of the 33rd edition of the Gösser Open will earn, €6,200 and 6,525 points.

Round 1 of the 2025 Gösser Open Ends with a Five-Way Tie for the Lead.
Maria Lankowitz, May 15th 2025- After the first round of the 2025 Gösser Open, we have a very tight leaderboard. Spain’s Javier Calles Roman and Asier Aguirre Izcue, Italy’s Gianmaria Rean Trinchero, France’s Theo Brizard and Maxime Legros are in a 5-way tie for the lead at 7 under-par, 65. There is a 9-way tie for 6th place at 6 under-par.
The first round of the 33rd edition of the Gösser Open teed off this morning at its traditional venue, Golf Club Erzherzog Johann in Maria Lankowitz, Austria. Players encountered a variety of weather conditions throughout the day. The morning featured overcast skies, light to no winds, and mild temperatures, while the afternoon brought stronger, swirling gusts and a noticeable drop in temperature.
The Gösser Open is one of the most important tournaments of the Alps Tour season and holds the distinction of being the oldest tournament on the Alps Tour schedule. This year, we are celebrating the 33rd edition of the tournament.
The event first began in 1993 at Steiermärkischer Golf Club Murhof, before moving to Golf Club Erzherzog Johann in 2000, where it has remained as the permanent host venue. Following the founding of the Alps Tour in 2001, the Gösser Open became part of the Tour schedule and has been a key event ever since. It is also widely regarded as the most traditional professional golf tournament in Austria.

Javier Calles Roman, 23, from Spain, who turned professional in May 2024, co-leads after the 1st round of the 2025 Gösser Open with a bogey-free round of 7 under-par, 65. He opened his round with a birdie on Hole 10 and continued his strong play with additional birdies on Holes 13, 14, and 15, before adding three more on Holes 1, 4, and 9 to close out the day. He said: “Today, went really well. I strongly believe that my course management was the key for my first-round score. I played really smart throughout the entire day and holed some important putts. The course conditions were perfect for scoring throughout this morning; we had little wind but with some difficulty pin positions. Obviously, conditions could change in the afternoon we this morning we could take advantage.” He strongly believes that he had a huge improvement in his putting from last week to this week and he was very thankful to see the work he put in pay off.
Italy’s Gianmaria Rean Trinchero, 29, finds himself alongside Calles Roman in the 5-way tie for lead with an opening round of 7 under-par, 65. In today’s opening round, he started on Hole 10 and quickly found his rhythm, carding four birdies on Holes 10,12,13 and 16. After making the turn, he added four more birdies on Holes 1, 2, 3, and 7. His only mistake of the day came on his final hole, the par-5 9th hole, where he made a bogey. Rean Trinchero is a two-time winner on the Alps Tour, with victories in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons. “My game was solid all around today. The only mistake came on my final hole, the 9th, where I hit a ball out of bounds and ended up with a bogey. It didn’t really bother me because I was committed to the shot—I just hit an errant one that cost me a stroke. I found a good sensation during my warm-up, which carried through the entire round. Every part of my game felt strong, from my driver to my sand wedge,” said Rean Trinchero after his opening round at the Gösser Open. “The course is much drier this week, than we’re used to, so I think we’ll see some lower scores. You can hit more irons off the tee, and at GC Erzherzog Johann, it’s really important to have your wedges dialed in and that’s something I’ll be focusing on over the next two rounds.”

Joining Calles Roman and Rean Trinchero in the five-way tie for the lead at 7-under-par, 65 is France’s Theo Brizard, 24. A regular on the Alps Tour over various seasons, Brizard is seeking his first title. He began his opening round on Hole 10, where he made four birdies on the back nine. After making the turn, he added four more birdies on the front nine, with his only bogey on the par 4, 6th hole. Brizard said: “it was a solid first round. I made sure to position myself well on the tougher holes and take advantage of the easier ones. Most importantly though, I was able to maintain a good playing rhythm throughout all 18 holes today. The course is in fabulous conditions, the fairways are firm, and the greens are receptive but not overly soft. Let’s say everything was just right! Let’s say the conditions were favorable for a good score but not easy. Today’s round confirmed that the gameplan I selected was good and it left me eager to get back out there.”

Asier Aguirre Izcue, 25, of Spain, the winner of last week’s Alps Tour event in Italy, shares the lead in the five-way tie after Round 1. Aguirre claimed his first Alps Tour title just a few days ago and has a strong history at GC Erzherzog Johann, having narrowly missed out on victory in a sudden-death playoff during the 2024 edition of the Gösser Open. “My game today was very similar to last week, especially my shots into the green. They were very good. I made some important putts today, the greens here aren’t easy are they are very grainy. The highlight of the round was on the par 4, 12th hole where I holed out from 70 meters. In the afternoon, the conditions worsen quite a bit compared to this morning as we had a lot of wind gusts and the temperature dropped, which made it more difficult. However, I stayed focus on my game, and it was a great day despite the tougher conditions. For sure the win last week gave me extra confidence and now I will try to continue the same way the rest of the tournament” explained Aguirre Izcue after his opening round.

France’s Maxime Legros, 23, is the final player in the share of the lead after the opening round with a score of 7 under-par, 65. He made 3 birdies and 2 bogeys on his opening front-nine while once he made the turn, he made three birdies in a row from Hole 10 to 12, then eagled the 13th hole and added one more birdie on hole 16 to end his round. “I didn’t hit the ball as good as I could have from the tees, but I kept it in play and gave myself many birdies opportunities. The course is in great shape this week, greens are great which is why I was able to make so many birdies. There are a lot of birdie opportunities on this course if you can place the ball in the correct spots from the tees,” said Legros. “I feel like we didn’t get the best tee time wave as playing in the afternoon today with the wind gusting and some rain didn’t help but I had the right mindset and kept focused on my game instead of external factors.”

The competitors this week, are battling it out for an overall prize fund of €42,500 and 45,000 Order of Merit points. The winner of the 33rd edition of the Gösser Open will earn, €6,200 and 6,525 points. Once Round 2 is completed, a cut will be to the top 40 professionals and ties, plus amateurs within the cutline.
